Herbert Haag (sports educator)

Herbert Haag (born January 6, 1937 in Munich ) is a German sports educator .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1954, Haag first studied at the Institute for Physical Education at the University of Freiburg and from 1956 to 1959 at the German Sport University in Cologne . He completed his studies as a certified sports teacher . In 1958 and 1959 he completed training as a state-certified ski instructor. From 1959 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Tübingen , while until 1963 he did a second degree in history , political science and educational sciences / physical education at the University of Tübingen (1st state examination for teaching at a grammar school). In 1964 he continued his studies in sports science at the University of Washington in Seattle , USA (1966 Master of Science in Physical Education, MS) before taking the second state examination for teaching at high schools in 1967 after his legal clerkship . From 1967 to 1971 he was first a research assistant , then an academic advisor at the University of Tübingen; In 1970 the doctorate to Dr. phil. about sport in the US. Haag had previously completed a research stay at Stanford University in the US state of California as a scholarship holder in 1970 . From 1971 to 1974 he was Professor of Sports Education at the University of Gießen , before he was appointed Professor of Sports Education and Director at the Institute for Sports and Sports Science at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) from 1974 to 2002 . In 1981, Haag was accepted into the US National Academy of Kinesiology . From 1991 to 1994 Haag was given leave of absence from Kiel University to work as founding director of the German Olympic Institute in Berlin.

After German reunification and the decision to close the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK), Haag campaigned for the preservation of sports science in Leipzig and was a member of the founding commission of the sports science faculty at Leipzig University . In 2002 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Leipzig as a thank you. According to Jürgen Krug , Haag was a “sponsor and mentor” of the sports science faculty at Leipzig University. Originally, Haag developed the (ultimately not implemented) vision of building “university centers for sports science” in Leipzig , Berlin , Cologne and Munich as part of the unification of the two German states . Haag later looked back on his term of office in Kiel (1974 to 2002) as follows: “Overall, it was a challenging and interesting job from 1974 to 2002, as sport, sports education and sports science had to be established in Kiel with a 'new face' . "

Haag's students include Bernd Strauss , Martin Lames and Michael Kolb .

From 2004, Haag was a lecturer in sports history, sports philosophy and research methology at the University of Konstanz . Until November 2015 he was chairman of the Kiel branch of the German Olympic Society (DOG). On the occasion of his resignation from office, he was awarded the DOG plaque of honor in gold. In 2017 he was awarded the Golden Badge of Honor by the German Association for Sports Science and by the World Association for Sports Science and Sports Education (ICSSPE) for his "services to promoting the cooperation of sports medicine, sports science and sports education".

Haag dealt extensively with the subject areas of evaluation of teaching and learning processes in sport, comparative sport pedagogy and research methodology. Above all, he has emerged as the author / editor of textbooks and study books in sports science, including fundamental works such as "Introduction to the Study of Sports Science" (1991), "Sports Philosophy" (1995), "Documents on Sports, Sports Education and Sports Science" ( 1991; together with August Kirsch and Wilfried Kindermann ), "Sport Science in Germany" (1992; together with August Kirsch and Ommo Grupe ) and the "Handbuch Sportpädagogik" (2001; together with Richard Hummel). He also published textbooks on the sports of alpine skiing, handball, dealt with Olympic education and was co-editor of several works in the context of "Practical ideas - series of publications for movement, games and sports". In addition to his research activities in Germany, Haag was also scientifically active in Canada, the USA, Australia, African and South American countries. He promoted the international orientation of sports science. As a retiree, he moved to Wangen im Allgäu . Since 1956 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Hercynia Freiburg im Breisgau .
