The village was first mentioned in 1367 as "zum Hildemundes". The settlement probably took place in the late migration period , as the Carolingian burial ground above Hilmes proves. In 1413 the place was mentioned as "zu dem Hildemans" and 1500 as "Hylmes".

The village belonged to the Landeck office in Hersfeld , which takes its name from the Landecker Berg. The largest part of this mountain are in the district of Hilmes. The Landeck castle ruins are located on the southeastern foothills of the Landecker Berg . The castle, built at the beginning of the 13th century, was a powerful base of the Hersfeld Abbey . There used to be an old custom that people from the surrounding area came together on Ascension Day to dance at the "Old Castle". Here, the stand -licensed to a Hilmeser host.

The village church Kilianskirche belonged to the deanery Geisa and thus to the diocese of Würzburg . The hall church with a dome roof was built from 1820 to 1822 and in 1966 the church space was reduced in size to reduce the size of the parish . In 2005 the church was expanded into a church center with a church hall. The Saint Anna bell in the roof turret was cast in 1518 by the bell founder Hans Kortrog, so there was probably a predecessor of today's church. There is a legend about the bell that when the church bells were cast, a damsel threw her jewelry into the melt . When the bell rings, the bells should call her name "Susanne-Marie".

In 1585 the place had 51 households, in 1747 there were still 31. There is a village community center in the place .

On August 1, 1972, Hilmes was incorporated into the community of Schenklengsfeld as part of the regional reform in Hesse .
