The Anton-Karg-Haus , formerly: Neue Hinterbärenbadhütte , is an Alpine Club hut of the Kufstein section of the Austrian Alpine Club in the Kaiser Mountains in Tyrol . The hut is named after the co-founder of the Unterinntal Alpine Club Section (later: Section Kufstein ), Anton Karg , from 1888 hüttenwart of the Hinterbärenbad shelter, from 1890 to 1919 first chairman of the Kufstein Section.

location

The Anton-Karg-Haus is located in the back of the Kaisertal at a point in the Kaiserbach stream called the Hinterbärenbad. The house is located in quiet, impressive surroundings with a view of the Wilder Kaiser and the Zahmer Kaiser in the middle of the Wilder Kaiser nature reserve . It is also easy to reach for day-trippers and is therefore a popular destination, especially when the weather is good.

The route to the hut is considered to be particularly scenic, as the light limestone cliffs of the Kaiser Mountains increasingly open up to the hiker on their way, you literally hike into the mountain. Even if the Kaiser Mountains are absolutely not very high, it is particularly impressive on this path due to the difference in altitude of over 1200 m between the level of the path and the peaks.

history

The Anton-Karg-Haus has a long tradition. In 1882 the municipality of Kufstein left an alpine hut to the Kufstein Section , which was opened as the Hinterbärenbadhütte on July 25, 1883 after renovation. After further expansion in 1884, the house, including a second, newly constructed wooden building, became the property of the Kufstein Section in 1886. After the construction of a veranda and the adaptation of the second house into a bedroom, the Hinterbärenbad shelter recorded visitors from 1887, which prompted the section to expand and partially rebuild in 1894. The New Hinterbärenbadhütte was built in the winter months from 1894 to 1895 and put into operation in the spring of 1895. At the same time, the hut was connected to the telephone network. The official opening took place in 1896. The Horngacher family, who had previously been hut owners, retired with the "old" hut. Only 3 years after it opened, the mountain hut burned down to the ground, only the telephone booth was strangely undamaged. In 1900 the current facility was finally opened. State 42 rooms (some with their own balcony) and 90 beds were available at that time. The house was used by respected citizens of Kufstein for summer retreat until the beginning of the 20th century .

Hinterbärenbad

The Anton-Karg-Haus is in a particularly beautiful spot on the Kaiserbach, the Hinterbärenbad. According to tradition, the brown bears , which used to be widespread throughout the Alpine region, cool themselves there on hot summer days by taking a bath. But it is also possible that the bears were only looking for food, which near the Kaiserbach looked like they were bathing.

In the 19th century the bears were exterminated by the alpine people who feared for their cattle. Efforts are being made to reintroduce brown bears in the Austrian Alps . Old drawings and paintings still bear witness to the earlier occurrence of the bears.
