History for Sale is the third studio album by Texan alternative rock band Blue October , released on April 8, 2003 in the US . The title of the album comes from part of the lyrics from the song Amazing , which was also recorded on the album. The album was produced in the Sound Art Studios in Houston and in the Stomp Box Studios in Arlington . It is the first album where ex-Blue October member Dwayne Cayse and guitarist CB Hudson played. Hudson would later stay with the band. On August 5th of the same year the album was re-released under Universal Records . The producers were David Castell and singer Justin Furstenfeld . The single Calling You was also released in 2003.

Text examples (selection)

Razorblade

In the song Razorblade (German: razor blade ), singer Furstenfeld takes up his life and his position on religion , which he denies. In the chorus he sings that he injured himself with a razor blade after relapsing , freaking out because he thinks nobody loves him and he is still proud of what he did. At the end he sings that he tried to let go and wanted to be happy.

Calling you

Calling You , which is probably the band's most famous song, is about his great love. He sings that she makes him happy and still wonders why she loves him. In the chorus he sings that he wants to call her anytime to hear that she loves him. He also describes how she showed him that the world is not as difficult as he previously thought.

Chameleon boy

In Song Chameleon Boy (dt .: Chameleonjunge ) Furstenfeld shows in this album first his two faces. He describes himself as a reptile who sheds his skin and thereby shows his injuries, some of which he has inflicted on himself. He sings that he can come up with excuses as to why he has deceived her. In the chorus he asks for support to fight the unconsciousness and fight the chameleon boy he never wanted to be. It also says that his life is sinking into chaos and describes it as self-destructive, like exploding gasoline .

Sexual power trip (One Big Lie) Bla Bla

Sexual power trip describes a supposed love. The song is sung from the first person perspective and it says that you shouldn't trust your words as the protagonist is trying to get another (female) person to bed. The chorus says that love is one lie.

Inner glow

The song Inner Glow tells of an outsider who tries to get out of his role. Furstenfeld sings that he will stand by him. It is said that if he fails, he should not hang his head, after all he "at least" tried to. The second verse says there is a new style for every song and wonders what went wrong with it. It also says that they only want to sing when they want to. They just want a dream to flaunt and they want like a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde . In the chorus, the singer asks what happens to the "inner glow" , the soul, the radio and his song. In the end, he sings that it's his song.

criticism

All Music wrote about History for Sale that it is stylistically no different than the previous CD Consent to Treatment from 2000. In his song Razorblade Furstenfeldangrily addresses his childhood and religion. The only song that promises hope is the radio hit Calling You with its melancholy rhythm. The emotions in this album seem very watery or very confusing.
