The Hochrhein-Gymnasium Waldshut (short: HGWT ) is the general high school in the city of Waldshut . In addition to a scientific and a modern language profile , a music profile is also offered. history

In 1964 the Hochrhein-Gymnasium celebrated its 150th birthday and in 1989 its 175th anniversary, which is why this grammar school is repeatedly referred to as the "oldest secondary school on the Upper Rhine". A “grammar school” in Waldshut can only be spoken of since 1945, but the history of the school goes back much further, probably back to 1814. In that year there was one elementary teacher for boys and girls in Waldshut. Two chaplains and a priest taught in the community and secondary schools . In 1840 it was upgraded to a higher citizen school. One of the teachers and provisional director of the school was the well-known folk writer Heinrich Hansjakob . In 1867/1868 the building of today's Hansjakobschule was occupied. From 1872 the school became a Realgymnasium with Latin as a compulsory subject. After a few changes, it was renamed the Realschule from 1893  - for a long time now on the second floor of the Kornhaus. In the school year 1901/1902 the gates opened for girls for the first time. In 1906 it was renamed and transformed into a Realprogymnasium with Realschule , in which English was also taught as a school subject for the first time .

1923/1924 there was one in the now nine-stage secondary school for the first time Oberprima than graduating class. During the Nazi regime , the school became a secondary school in 1937 with the addition of the Hochrheinschule . The upper and lower prima, the two final classes, were merged. During this time, the students of the St. Blasien college were also taught at the secondary school in Waldshut after it was closed.

In October 1945 the Hochrheinschule was able to resume teaching with restrictions, despite all the disruptions caused by the war. In 1948, in the course of the general renaming of the higher schools in South Baden , the secondary school became the Waldshut grammar school . The inauguration of the new school building took place on July 19, 1958.

The number of pupils rose from around 230 in 1914 to up to 480 boys and girls in 1953. In the 1960s, the number of students reached the limit of 1,200 - the building was bursting at the seams again. For this reason, another grammar school was built in the then still independent neighboring town of Tiengen, initially as a Progymnasium . In 1969 today's Klettgau-Gymnasium was inaugurated. The number of pupils at the Hochrhein-Gymnasium subsequently fell to below 600. In 2006, however, there were again almost 1,000 pupils at the Hochrhein-Gymnasium.

Language sequences

At the Hochrhein-Gymnasium Waldshut, all students start with the first foreign language English in the 5th grade. From the 6th grade onwards, either French or Latin is available as a second foreign language . For the students of the linguistic profile, the third foreign language follows from the 8th grade - Spanish . In addition, there is the possibility for the students of the other profiles to acquire the Latinum as a supplementary examination , for which they are prepared within the framework of a working group (AG).

There is also a student council at the Hochrhein-Gymnasium Waldshut (SMV). In the SMV meeting at the beginning of the school year, speakers are elected on various topics such as culture, sport and the public. Assessors are also elected for the school conference and the school development committee. Since the middle of the 2008/2009 school year, two level spokespersons have been elected from among the class representatives for the lower and middle grades to support the student representatives.

Partner schools

Upper Rhine seminar

Particularly interested and talented pupils take part in the Hochrhein seminar for mathematics and natural sciences, which has existed since the 1997/1998 school year for grammar schools in the Waldshut district.

The task of the seminar is to support students primarily in the upper secondary school . Each participant decides on one or more of the offered working groups with a special level of difficulty from the fields of mathematics, physics , technical physics , chemistry , biology or computer science .

A common bond for all seminar students is a series of events with lectures and company visits. This offer is supplemented and rounded off by study trips and weekend seminars.

Music profile

Music at the Hochrhein-Gymnasium Waldshut

The Hochrhein-Gymnasium is one of the few high schools in Baden-Württemberg that offers a music profile. For the lower grades, this means increased music lessons . For the students of the music profile, music becomes the main subject in grades 9–11 (G9) and 8–10 (G8). In the course level there is the possibility of choosing music as a profile subject over a four-hour period.

In addition, there is a wide range of activities for the schoolchildren: big band , lower school choir, jazz and pop choir, orchestra and chamber music. The highlights of the music education are the numerous concert appearances.
