Hochtregist is a place in western Styria and a cadastral municipality and Rotte of the municipality of Bärnbach in the Voitsberg district in Styria . The place was an independent municipality from 1850 to 1952.

Place name and geography

The name Hochtregist is derived from the Old Slavic personal name * Trěbogostb , which over time has become a mountain and settlement name.

Hochtregist is located in the north-eastern part of the municipality of Bärnbach on the slopes of the Hochkogel , the Schrapfberg and the Hochtregist mountain , east of the Kainach . The area of the cadastral community is located on the northern edge of the Köflach-Voitsberg basin , but geologically it belongs largely to the western Graz mountainous region . In the northwest and north, the Ofenbach marks the border with the municipality of Kainach near Voitsberg with the cadastral municipality of Kohlschwarz . In the northeast, the border runs to the Geistthal-Södingberg community with the cadastral community Eggartsberg , with the Terschangraben partially forming the border, and the border along the Mittereggerbach to the Södingberg cadastral community . In the east is the 500 meter long border to the cadastral community of Aichegg in the market town of Stallhofen . The municipality of Voitsberg with the two cadastral municipalities Lobmingberg and Tregist is located southeast and south of Hochtregist. In the western part of Hochtregist the Kainach forms almost the entire border to the cadastral community of Bärnbach.

In addition to the Rotte of the same name, the Hochtregist area also includes the Oberdorf district , the scattered settlements of Lichtenegg , Schrapfberg , Schrott , Tregisttal and Weingartsberg as well as the Peter Leitner settlement . The Rotte Afling is partly on the territory of the cadastral community. The disused Oberdorf open-cast mine is located in the south of Hochtregist .

history

Today's place was created in the High Middle Ages on a cleared area that was cleared before 1147 and originally consisted of individual farms with deserted corridors . In 1147 the area around today's Hochtregist came to the Rein monastery and in the 14th century it passed to the rule of Söding . The first written mention of the place took place in 1342 as at the Tregast . Further mentions were made in 1368 as an der Tregost and finally in 1790 as Hoch Tregist .

Until the abolition of the manorial rule in 1848, the inhabitants of the place belonged to various dominions, such as Altkainach , the Wolfshuber office of the Greißenegg dominion , the Haller office of the Kleinkainach dominion , the Kainach office of the Lankowitz dominion , the Tregist office of the Obervoitsberg dominion , the Office Tregist of the rule Piber , the office Söding of the Rein monastery and the office Kainach of the rule Rehregg . The parish valid went to Köflach and the Carmelite valid went to Voitsberg. Hochtregist belonged to the advertising district of the Piber estate until 1846 and then came to the advertising district of the Lankowitz estate.

As a result of the Theresian reforms , the place was subordinated to the Grazer Kreis and after the upheaval in 1848 it was assigned to the Voitsberg district until 1867 . With the constitution of the free municipalities in 1850, the free local municipality of Hochtregist emerged from the place. In January 1922, one of the community's landowners applied to the Voitsberg district administration in vain for the removal of Mayor Heinrich Graschi, who raised the community levies for 1922 by 2300 percent and refused to provide assistance to farmers who had been badly damaged by storms. On June 21, 1933 there was a local group of the Styrian Homeland Security , subordinate to Max Brückern, the overseer of the Oberdorf mine , which was officially dissolved on that day. As a result of the February battles in 1934 , the municipal council was dissolved and Konrad Scherz was appointed government commissioner. During the Second World War, on June 26, 1944, English airmen dropped several containers with weapons and supplies over Hochtregist. As a result, these containers were seized by the Landwacht, the Sturmabteilung, the Hitler Youth and a police patrol from the gendarmerie. In November 1944, displaced ethnic Germans were housed in the community . On December 31, 1947, the leader of Austria's monarchist partisans, Heinz Fink, was arrested in Franz Payer's house .

In July 1950 the foundation stone for a new municipal office was laid. In 1952 it was merged with the municipality of Bärnbach.

Culture and sights

The local chapel Tregist

Altogether there is one listed building in Hochtregist. The Tregist local chapel in Tregisttal , near the municipality boundary to Voitsberg , was built in the 1980s and artistically designed by Franz Weiss between 1986 and 1992 . The Altsteigerkapelle was Anton Schirgi, 1857 vulgo Altsteiger built. At the Hochtregisterstraße with the Hagen cross one erected in the 19th century leaves shrine . The base made of natural stone protrudes a little and the octagonal holy water kettle is made of gray sandstone. In the niche of the wayside shrine , decorated with two angels painted in naive style , there is a protective cloak Madonna and a figure of the Lord God. There are also two benches and prayer stools by the wayside shrine. The Jausnerkreuz, a tabernacle shrine, dates from the 17th century and was originally located on the former church path to Voitsberg. Since this came off through the Oberdorf opencast mine, the wayside shrine was relocated and was redesigned by Franz Weiss around 1986. Its shape identifies it as a probable plague cross , which has a lantern top and four flat-arched niches.
