history

Hopfelde is first identified as Hubfelde in the Reichenbach Office's bills from 1383 .

In 1409 the lords of Hundelshausen were enfeoffed by Landgrave Hermann II and in 1516 by Landgrave Ludwig II. With goods from Hopfelde. In 1562 Hermann von Hundelshausen handed over his property in Hopfelde to Landgrave Philipp . In 1569, Landgrave Wilhelm IV enfeoffed Johann von Ratzenberg with Hufen zu Hopfelde, as did Messrs. Kanne von Lügde in 1581. In 1575/85 a number of Huben zu Hopfelde were Hessian fiefs of the Kanne. In 1593, Landgrave Moritz enfeoffed von Meisenbug with goods from Hopfelde.

In 1579 the village had 18 men and fireplaces, six in 1639 and only four in 1650 (effects of the Thirty Years' War ). In 1679 there were 17 fireplaces again. The population rose to 80 in 1750. According to the 1970 census, there were 334, and today there are 326 inhabitants.

Hopfelde used to be mainly a farming village with day laborers . Agriculture was difficult, so that grazing and livestock farming were predominantly carried out. Flax cultivation was also important. The flax was processed by linen weavers - that was the farmers - (1724 44 linen weavers) in the village. Hopfelder Leinen was known in Lower Saxony and in the Ringgau . Later, the residents of Lichtenau found work in the heavy weaving mill Frölich and Wolff (1907) and in the Glimmerode lignite mine , which was opened in 1912, but which ceased production in 1966/1968. During this time, a large chipboard factory settled at the gates of the village. However, this ceased operations in the mid-1980s.

On January 1, 1974, was in the course of administrative reform in Hesse until then the district Witzenhausen belonging municipality powerful state law in the city of Hessisch Lichtenau in the newly formed Werra-Meissner incorporated .

The municipal area covers 525 ha. The usable area is 40 ha due to open-cast lignite mining and 200 ha due to the Blücher barracks (Hessisch Lichtenau) . The structural change meant that new building sites had to be developed. The new building area "Blaues Wunder" was created, in which the multi-purpose hall, inaugurated in 1975, is a place for cultural, sporting and social events.
