The district of Huanchay is located in the province of Huaraz in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was established on October 16, 1933. It has an area of ​​209 km². The 2017 census counted 1737 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3079, in 2007 it was 2517. The district administration is located in the 2592  m high village of Huanchay with 310 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huanchay is 38 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Huaraz .

Geographical location

The district of Huanchay is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Negra in the southwest of the province of Huaraz. The district extends over the catchment area of the Quebrada Huanchay, upper reaches of the Río Culebras .

The district of Huanchay borders in the far west with the district Culebras ( province Huarmey ), in the northwest and in the north with the district Pampas Grande , in the northeast with the district La Libertad and in the east and south with the district Coris ( province Aija ).
