action

Eddie Hawkins, nicknamed "Hudson Hawk," is a former safe-cracker and master thief - and has just been released from prison. Before he finally gets to drink one of his beloved cappuccinos again, he is blackmailed into various art thefts by several parties (including the Mafia and the CIA ).

Hawkins gets to work and soon discovers that behind all of this there is a mysterious company called Mayflower Industries ; Its owners, the crazy billionaire couple Darwin and Minerva Mayflower, want to use parts of a crystal hidden in the artwork to complete the Macchina del Oro , a machine developed by Leonardo da Vinci for producing gold . To do this, they mainly need three of da Vinci's works, the model of an equestrian statue of Duke Francesco Sforza , the Codex and the helicopter . The billionaire couple want to use it to produce so much gold that the world market price drops drastically. Because it would make everyone who hoarded gold poorer, the Mayflowers would be richest and rule the world.

Anna Baragli, art specialist and secret agent of a counterespionage organization of the Vatican , attaches itself to Hudson Hawks heels and soon falls in love him. Nevertheless, she tries to prevent him from stealing the Codex from St. Peter's Basilica ; their organization has reached an agreement with CIA agent George Kaplan to get at the backers of the conspiracy.

Hawk soon finds out that not only Kaplan but also his best friend Tommy Five-Tone works for the Mayflowers. However, he and Tommy manage to escape with a trick and decide to put an end to their opponents together with Anna. They are chased by a number of Mayflowers agents, who eventually fall into their hands. At Da Vinci's castle, where the Macchina del Oro is to be completed, there is a showdown between Hawk's team, the Mayflowers and Kaplan's men.

Hawk is forced to put the crystal together, but deliberately makes a mistake - with catastrophic consequences: half of the castle is blown up when Darwin tries to produce Mayflower gold, Hawk and Anna escape in one of Da Vinci's primitive flying devices. Finally they come to rest against the backdrop of the burning castle - and Hudson Hawk for his cappuccino.

background

  • Isabella Rossellini was originally intended for the role of Anna, but was later replaced by Maruschka Detmers ( St. Pauli Nacht ). Since she had to leave the project because of back problems, Andie MacDowell stepped in.
  • The film uses a mix of different conspiracy theories and references to other films - most notably the popular Our Man Flint films starring James Coburn from the 1960s.
  • An integral part of the film are the vocals of Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello. Her songs are also included in the film's soundtrack.
  • The facade of the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana served as the backdrop for the Mayflower Villa .

reception

Hudson Hawk was spectacularly panned by the criticism , the box office receipts were very low: at a cost of 65 million US dollars , the film grossed only 17.2 million in the USA. This was followed by the Golden Raspberry for the worst director (Lehmann), the worst script (Kraft, Willis, de Souza) and the worst film. The film was also nominated in the categories of Worst Leading Actor (Bruce Willis), Worst Supporting Actor (Richard E. Grant), and Worst Supporting Actress (Sandra Bernhard). The makers mainly attributed this to the sometimes chaotic filming and the constantly changing script.

Bruce Willis withdrew from screenwriting in the following years and concentrated on his work as an actor.

Reviews

"A tangled hodgepodge of commercial action and dull parody approaches, in whose disorganized hustle and bustle every spark of humor and tension is stifled."

“The mix of slapstick, musical and thriller flopped in the cinema, but it is worth seeing as a bizarre one-off. Conclusion: Over-the-top parody of cinema superheroes. "
