IC 940 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 312 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 65,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5300 , IC 939 and IC 943 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on June 3, 1891 .
