history

Marko Orešković, namesake of IKOM.

IKOM was founded in 1946 as a company for the production of cast, forged and pressed metal products through a merger of several private craft businesses from Zagreb and Varaždin . The namesake of the state enterprise of communist Yugoslavia was Tito partisan Marko Orešković (1895–1941), a trained metal worker, who was murdered by Serbian Chetniks in World War II . At the time it was founded, the company employed around 130 people and in 1948 around 310 people. The production took place at several locations in Zagreb.

Initially, the factory only produced metal badges , medals , plaques , cups , decorations and decorations , uniform effects , silver and gold jewelry and platinum products for medical and scientific purposes.

In the first half of the 1950s , the product range was expanded when the consumption of natural gas and the use of gas meters in business and private households began to increase. In cooperation with the German company Rombach from Karlsruhe , IKOM was the first Yugoslav company to start producing gas meters. Shortly afterwards, IKOM began to manufacture gas flow heaters , gas stoves and water meters , which were incorporated into the Zagreb water supply system.

From 1960 to 1966 production increased by 85%, and in 1966 IKOM employed around 650 people. In the second half of the 1960s , almost 90% of gas stoves were exported.

With the adoption of the Law on Community Work ( Zakona o udruženom radu ), IKOM was divided into two work organizations, so-called OOUR ( Organizacija udruženog rada ) in the mid- 1970s . The Costume Jewelry and Special Goods Organization ( OOUR Bižuterija i galanterija ) produced gold and silver jewelry, technical objects made of precious metal, orders and decorations, medals, badges for military and other uniforms, sports trophies, plaques, badges, mugs, metal labels for industrial products, souvenirs , Metal accessories and costume jewelry. The Precision Mechanics and Gas Devices Organization ( OOUR Precizna mehanika i plinski aparati ) produced universal gas stoves for all fuel gases, household and industrial water meters and membrane household gas meters .

At the end of the 1970s , IKOM employed around 1,000 people.

At the beginning of the 1980s , the demand for the organization of costume jewelery and special goods declined and since 1983 IKOM has concentrated increasingly on the production of gas meters, water meters, calorimeters , gas water heaters, pressure regulators and gas facade stoves in cooperation with the precision mechanics industry in Belgrade .

IKOM's facilities and warehouses were spread across around ten locations across Zagreb. In 1978, the company bought land in the Zagreb suburb of Jankomir in order to bring all factories and warehouses together at a common location. The original plans were for completion by 1985, but construction did not take place. In the mid-1980s, IKOM employed around 800 people.

In 1989 the two IKOM work organizations were transferred to independent companies. Both companies were privatized in 1992 and now operate as limited liability companies . In the 1990s , they each had an average of 30 to 60 employees.
