Memberships and cooperations

activities

Islamic Relief Germany has been the sponsoring association of the Muslim Pastoral Care Telephone (MuTeS) in Berlin since 2009 . MuTeS is the first project that Islamic Relief Germany has established permanently in Germany for the first time. On this project, Islamic Relief Germany is cooperating with Caritas , Diakonie and Kirchliche TelefonSeelsorge Berlin (KTS) . The cooperation relates primarily to the areas of training, further education and supervision.

Meals for orphans

In 2013, Islamic Relief Germany launched the “Food for Orphans” campaign, which begins every year on the birthday of Prophet Muhammad and lasts for several weeks. Muslims serve food for a "good cause" to which they invite their family, friends or acquaintances and collect donations for orphans in need. The donation meals are expressly intended to serve interreligious and intercultural encounters. So far, the campaign has met with lively media interest. The prominent supporters of the campaign include Christian Wulff , Frank-Walter Steinmeier , Aydan Özoğuz , Margot Käßmann , who also took part in donation dinners, as well as Hannelore Kraft , Cem Özdemir , Navid Kermani and Aiman Mazyek .

Islamic Relief Kleiderkammer gGmbH

The Islamic Relief Kleiderkammer gGmbH was founded in 2014 . Their aim is to generate income through donated clothing in order to promote development projects. All proceeds go back to Islamic Relief and are used exclusively for charitable projects that benefit the needy. The Kleiderkammer gGmbH is based in Cologne and Berlin. The Islamic Relief Kleiderkammer gGmbH also operates two “charity shops” (in Cologne and Berlin), in which donated clothing and other donations in kind such as toys or housewares are sold. The Kleiderkammer gGmbH is also active in refugee aid.

Visit of the British politician Tim Farron

On February 19, 2016, the party leader of the Liberal Democrats , Tim Farron , visited the Islamic Relief Germany headquarters and found out about the refugee crisis there . Afterwards they visited the Cologne City Hall and discussed the challenges of the refugee crisis with Vice-Mayor Andreas Wolter .

Conference in cooperation with Deutsche Welthungerhilfe

On December 7th and 8th, 2009 the conference “Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Work in the Context of Islam” took place in Bonn. In cooperation with Deutsche Welthungerhilfe , Islamic Relief Germany organized a two-day conference.

Participation in the “Support Syria 2016” conference

Together with the German government and other German NGOs, Islamic Relief Germany took part in the Syria donor conference. Together with 70 other organizations, Islamic Relief signed a position paper calling for an immediate end to the state of siege, not to hinder humanitarian aid in Syria, to double the effort in peace negotiations and to give refugees a legal alternative to illegal refugee routes. At the conference, the participating states pledged a total of $ 11 billion in humanitarian aid in Syria.

Ratio of IRD to IRW

According to the Berlin Senate, in the past, according to its statutes and its own annual report, the IRD was classified as a "part of the international aid organization 'Islamic Relief Worldwide'" based in Birmingham / Great Britain, which was banned by the Israeli authorities in June 2014 because the Organization is part of the Hamas funding apparatus . The Federal Government refers to the personal links between the two organizations.

The donations collected by the IRD for the implementation of the aid projects should be forwarded to Islamic Relief Great Britain / IRW in accordance with the statutes. Since 2013, the IRD has only referred to itself in its statutes as a “cooperation partner of the international aid organization 'Islamic Relief Worldwide'”. The relief work of the IRD is coordinated by the "international office in Birmingham". Connections between “Islamic Relief Germany e. V. ”and“ Islamic Relief Worldwide ”also result from personal links, according to statements by the Federal Government. So are / were board members of “Islamic Relief Germany e. V. ”represented in leading positions of“ Islamic Relief Worldwide ”.

The Israeli NGO Monitor criticizes the activities of the parent organization.

Links to the Muslim Brotherhood

Islamic Relief is - structurally and personally - an institution in the network of actions of the Muslim Brotherhood . According to the Berlin Senate and the federal government, Islamic Relief Deutschland e. V. on connections to organizations related to the Muslim Brotherhood (MB). In a written answer to a small inquiry from the FDP parliamentary group on April 15, 2019, the federal government once again confirmed “significant personal connections” between “Islamic Relief Worldwide” and “Islamic Relief Deutschland e. V. ”to the“ Muslim Brotherhood ”or related organizations. At the same time, the Federal Government confirmed that “from the publicly available annual reports of 'Islamic Relief Deutschland e. V. ' and 'Islamic Relief Worldwide' (is) known that 'Islamic Relief Deutschland e. V. ' transfers most of the financial project funding to 'Islamic Relief Worldwide'. "

The "Islamic Community in Germany e. V. "- today" German Muslim Community "- is the central organization of supporters of the MB in Germany. At their annual meeting in December 2015, the IRD was represented with a speech and was the main sponsor; According to Sigrid Herrmann-Marschall , there is hardly an event in such structures that can be assigned to the Muslim Brotherhood where the IRD does not appear as a sponsor. In spring 2016, the IRD also sponsored various events of the organization “Muslim Youth in Germany e. V. “(MJD) in appearance, a formally independent youth organization that maintains close ties to the IGD. The Federal Government mentions this under the heading "Connections to efforts within the meaning of Section 3 of the Act on Cooperation between the Federation and the Länder in matters relating to the protection of the constitution and through the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BVerfSchG)", i.e. unconstitutional efforts.

According to the Berlin Senate, personal links between the IRD and the IGD result from the chairman of the IRD, who held the office of chairman of the IGD Shura Council. In addition, the former president of the IGD is one of the initiators and founding members of the IRD, he was a member of the board of directors of the IRD and held the post of chairman of the "Board of Trustees" of the IRW.

transparency

Every year, the organization publishes a financial report in addition to the annual report and aims to offer donors full transparency. She is also a member of the German Donation Council and the Transparent Civil Society Initiative . The broadcaster rbb reported that the funding of IRD led to a review of the Foreign Office by the Federal Audit Office. The result is still pending. The federal government has therefore basically relied solely on publicly accessible sources of the IRD and IRW's public relations work.

Sigrid Herrmann-Marschall accuses Islamic Relief of a lack of transparency: “The often emphasized transparency appears as pseudo-transparency, because important questions are only apparently answered. All sorts of certificates, testimonial statements and other distractions are tried so that this is not noticed. ”In this context, the author also criticizes the award of the certificate by the German Donation Council to IRD.

criticism

Islamic Relief has been accused by the Israeli Defense Ministry of being “part of the financial system of the Hamas organization.”, Israel, the EU and the United States classify Hamas as a terrorist organization. The major British bank HSBC announced in 2016 that it had ended its cooperation with Islamic Relief in 2014. Islamic Relief Germany, however, denies the support of Hamas an observer of the Islamist scene, Sigrid Herrmann-Marschall can still claim, despite the organization's complaint, that the aid organization Islamic Relief Germany (IRD) and also the parent organization from Great Britain are involved in financing the Hamas would participate. The federal government points to support from organizations of the Muslim Brotherhood. The IRD is audited by the Federal Audit Office. The BZ Berlin dubbed the IRD as a "Hamas supporter" and was obliged by the IRD to publish a counter-statement, which provided the BZ with the note that it was obliged to publish the counter-statement regardless of its truthfulness under the State Broadcasting Treaty.

The entire board of "Islamic Relief Worldwide", the largest Muslim charity in Great Britain, announced its resignation at the end of August 2020 after it was announced that its new chairman Almoutaz Tayara , who had only been in office last month , would continue to chair until October 2020 Islamic Relief Germany , which called Israel a “Zionist enemy” and praised Hamas, reported The Times in London . Tayara's predecessor had also fallen out of favor because of anti-Semitic comments and resigned in July 2020.

In 2017, Islamic Relief Canada featured the conservative Islamic preacher Nouman Ali Khan, who advocates corporal punishment for prostitutes, adulterers and porn actors. In 2017, the UK branch of Islamic Relief invited Islamic preacher Yasir Qadhi to speak on a fundraising tour. Qadhi describes corporal punishment like chopping off hands as "very beneficial for society". Qadhi has also performed at Islamic Relief USA.
