The Institute for Saxon History and Folklore e. V. (ISGV) is a research facility based in Dresden , which undertakes research into Saxony from a regional historical and folkloric perspective.

history

The efforts to set up an institute for Saxon history and folklore go back to a unanimous resolution of the Saxon state parliament on May 23, 1996. Part of this resolution was the conception for such an institute with the basic task, "the rich cultural assets of Saxony, the life and living conditions of the people in the various regions of Saxony as well as the Saxon state history with the help of an exceptionally well-preserved written tradition in the Saxon archives among the To explore the conditions of free research, to research and present the historical achievement and importance of Saxony in the German and European context and at the same time to make an important contribution to the promotion of the awareness of history and homeland as part of the regional identity of its residents. "

After completing the planning and preliminary work, the ISGV was founded as a registered association in Dresden on October 21, 1997 . Founding members of this association are the Free State of Saxony, represented by the Saxon State Ministry for Science and Art (SMWK), the Technical University of Dresden , the University of Leipzig , the Technical University of Chemnitz , the Technical University of Bergakademie Freiberg , the Saxon Academy of Sciences and the Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library and the Sorbian Institute e. V. Bautzen .

Institute structure

The ISGV is located at Zelleschen Weg  17 in the immediate vicinity of the Dresden University Campus and the main building of the Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library .

A board of trustees , in which the SMWK, the rectors of the Technical University of Dresden and the University of Leipzig and a member of the sponsoring association are represented, is responsible for the supervision of all fundamental matters of the ISGV . The activities of the institute are accompanied by a scientific advisory board made up of internationally recognized representatives of the subjects of history and folklore.

The board of directors of the ISGV is jointly carried out by two professors from the Technical University of Dresden and the University of Leipzig, who take turns in the management every two years . The founding board of directors included the two chairmen of the founding commission, Walter Schmitz (Technical University of Dresden) until 1999 and Günther Wartenberg (University of Leipzig) until 2002. They were replaced by the holders of the respective regional history chairs at the two universities, Winfried Müller (Dresden) and Enno Bünz (Leipzig). In May 2020, Andreas Rutz took over from Winfried Müller.

The two research areas of the ISGV are each headed by department heads, who are usually scientists who have qualified as a professor . The history department has been headed by Joachim Schneider since 2019 . His predecessors were Katrin Keller (1998–1999) and Martina Schattkowsky (1999–2019). Ira Spieker has been head of the Folklore Department since 2014 . Before that, Bernd Schöne (1998–2000), Johannes Moser (2002–2006) and Manfred Seifert (2006–2013) were responsible for the work area.

Research projects

In addition to medium-term research projects, which primarily serve to open up qualification opportunities (e.g. doctoral studies ) for young scientists , several long-term basic research projects are carried out at the ISGV , which are made available online as comprehensively as possible:

  • The project Repertorium Saxonicum deals with the indexing of the Saxon administrative inheritance books from the middle of the 16th century. The official registers have been electronically recorded since 2006 and are accessible to research using a database .
  • As part of the Codex diplomaticus Saxoniae (CDS) , the most important edition of documents from the Middle Ages for Central Germany, work on the holdings was resumed at the ISGV after decades of standstill with the processing of the documents of the Altzelle monastery and the papal documents of the Saxon Central State Archives in Dresden . Two volumes of the document book of the city of Zwickau were last published in 2014 . In addition, the expansion and continuation of the document book of the city of Dresden is planned. Since 2005, all volumes of the “old series” published up to 1941 have been made available online.
  • With the Saxon Biography , the ISGV aims to create a central online lexicon of important people who have worked in the Saxon region from the 10th century to the present.
  • The visual archive of visual sources on folk culture in Saxony contains a unique collection of photographs, images and other graphic products on Saxon culture. The media that have been collected so far will be successively expanded and some of them can be accessed via an online database.
  • As part of the collection project Life History Archive , an attempt is made to make historical and current everyday life in Saxony and the neighboring regions accessible from the perspective of contemporary witnesses with the help of ego documents . For this purpose, appropriate materials are specifically acquired or collected within the framework of ongoing scientific projects.
  • The historical directory of Saxony , which was published in a new edition revised by Karlheinz Blaschke and Susanne Baudisch in 2006 , has been available in an online database since 2008, which is gradually being updated and expanded.

Publications

The publication profile of the ISGV in the classic print media segment includes two scientific journals and four book series :

Magazines
  • The New Archive for Saxon History (NASG) is the traditional magazine for Saxon regional history. It first appeared in 1863 and has been published since 1999 (Volume 70) in connection with the ISGV.
  • In the yearbook Volkskunde in Sachsen (ViS) primarily articles on the folklore of Saxony and the Central German area are published. In addition, in the tradition of the former GDR magazine Demos , articles from or about Eastern Europe are also to be published.
Book series
  • The series of writings on Saxon history and folklore, edited by the board of directors and the department heads, has been published by the Leipzig University Press since 2000 . To date, more than 45 volumes have been published under the series title. It forms the central forum of the ISGV for the publication of new research results and includes conference proceedings and monographs at the same time . In addition to dissertations or habilitation theses on the history and culture of Saxony that were prepared at Saxon universities, relevant qualification papers from other federal states are now also taken into account.
  • The building blocks from the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore form the "small" series of the ISGV. It has been published by the web Universitätsverlag since 2004 and currently comprises 33 volumes. This series is primarily intended for source editions and small-scale studies, such as high-quality master's theses , as well as for the documentation of workshops .
  • Documentations, inventories and source editions from the fields of history and folklore have been published by the Leipzig University Press since 2004 under the title Sources and Materials on Saxon History and Folklore. This series is intended as a supplement to the “large” series of publications so that their series character can be preserved.
  • The series in search of traces - the history and culture of Saxony was opened in 2007 on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the ISGV. Current topics of regional history and folklore are dealt with here for a wider audience, in a language that is easy to understand and with as many illustrations as possible.
