I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) was released as the first single from the Whitney album and released worldwide on May 2, 1987. The single became a number one hit in 14 countries including Germany , Switzerland , Italy , the Netherlands , Belgium , Norway , Sweden , Great Britain , the USA , Canada , Australia and New Zealand . On the B-side was the track Moment of Truth .

Originally the song was supposed to be played in country music style, but due to Houston's style it was decided to make a dance pop number out of it. In 1988 the song won the Grammy Awards for Best Female Vocal Performance - Pop, and it also won the Favorite Pop / Rock Single category of the American Music Awards .

With the exception of an alto saxophone, only synthetic instruments were used for music production, which was not uncommon in pop music of the 80s. The drum track was programmed with the Roland TR-808 drum computer , and the cowbell and handclap sounds typical of the 808 are particularly striking. The bass and guitar sounds were also recorded with synthesizers. Various synth and keyboard sounds were placed on top.

Music video

The music video was directed by Brian Grant and contains color and black and white photographs . At the beginning of the video, Houston leaves a stage where spectators applaud her and she goes backstage. At the beginning everything is still black and white, but later the scenes are colored. The meaning of the text in which Houston is dancing and different men appear in the clip is then re-enacted. It was one of the most played videos on MTV , VH1 and Black Entertainment Television .
