I Was Made for Lovin 'You is a song by American hard rock - band Kiss . It became a number 1 hit in a number of countries in the second half of 1979 and made it into the top ten in many other countries . The single from the album Dynasty was awarded gold in Germany .

History of origin

Kiss had recorded albums in their typical hard rock style in the 1970s. In 1979 they deviated from this for the first time with their seventh studio LP, Dynasty , released on May 23 . The background to this was the disco wave at the time, which dominated broad musical tastes and the music market from 1976 to 1979.

I Was Made for Lovin 'You is Dynasty's opening song . The music and lyrics are largely provided by singer and rhythm guitarist Paul Stanley , who sang the song, Desmond Child and Vini Poncia . Ace Frehley replaced Gene Simmons as bass player when recording the piece. Peter Criss , who left a short time later, was also no longer part of the studio recordings. Instead of him, Anton Fig played the drums.

I Was Made for Lovin 'You was the band's most internationally successful song, although or precisely because it did not correspond to their typical sound, but - more than all the other pieces on the album - was due to the disco wave dominating large parts of the music sector. In Canada , it came in first place and received gold status. In the Netherlands and New Zealand the song also came in first place. In Australia , Switzerland , France and Germany it was in second place, in Austria in 6th place, in Norway in 10th place. In the USA it was in 11th place and therefore not in the top ten, but received gold status. In the UK, the song reached number 50.

In Germany, I Was Made for Lovin 'You was in the top ten for a total of 16 weeks from July 28, 1979 to November 16, 1979. The piece reached the highest chart placement at number 2 on September 8, 1979 for four weeks. Despite a number of other top ten hits and great commercial success, the band was unable to achieve this chart position with any other song in Germany. The group was already established at the time and had been at the forefront of international rock music for years, but through I Was Made for Lovin 'You they became known to an even wider audience of different ages.

Maxi singles

I Was Made for Loving You was also released as a maxi single before the album Dynasty was released. This was offered as a "Special Remix " and had a length of 7:54 minutes. The remix was produced by Jim Burgess . On the back was the title Charisma . In addition, the remix version of I Was Made for Loving You was released on a one-page maxi single for the radio. Another maxi single, this time with Hard Times on the B-side, was released in Germany, but it wasn't the remix, but the album version (04:29) of the song.

Cover versions

The song was covered many times. The Finnish band Eläkeläiset covered the song as a Humppa version with Finnish lyrics under the title Dementikon keppihumppa . Moreover, it inspired Hank Sherman when writing the song Devil Eyes that on the 1982 first EP of the band Mercyful Fate appeared while their singer King Diamond in I Was Made for Lovin 'You can see the beginning of the descent of Kiss. In 1998 the German dance group Scooter covered the hit hit by Kiss and reached number 26 in the German charts with the double A-side single We Are the Greatest / I Was Made for Lovin 'You . The German band Die Ärzte took over parts of I Was Made for Lovin 'You in their version of Kiss' Unholy , as did the duo K2 in the refrain of Der Berg ruft .

The Norwegian musician Maria Mena recorded a version of the song for her album Cause and Effect in 2008. She released I Was Made for Loving You as a single in 2009, which reached number 20 in Switzerland. In 2010, the track under the title Si l'on s'aimait, si , recorded by the French benefit band Les Enfoirés, was placed in the French, Belgian and Canadian charts for several weeks.

Quotes from contributors

“This song hit the whole world like a bomb. At the time, disco music was very popular and I thought to myself, 'Writing this kind of music is a no brainer!' I actually wrote it for fun, but at the same time it was a challenge for me. [...] So the song ran according to a certain scheme. I thought: 'I use everything from dance and all sound effects.' It was like trying to prove to ourselves that if you just analyze and tear apart a song, it's easy to write a hit. [...] Nevertheless, we landed our biggest international hit with just one song from this album. The album marked a change of direction. "

- Paul Stanley

"I mean, 'I Was Made for Lovin' You 'was a smash hit around the world, but it didn't go with Kiss because it didn't embody our real identity."

- Gene Simmons

“The first piece Paul and I wrote was' I Was Made for Lovin 'You'. The song paved the way for a new style of music, a combination of dance music and rock. "

- Desmond Child

“When they came up with 'I Was Made for Lovin' You, 'the first verse was already done. I wrote the chorus and let the songs end in the tradition of the Brill Building . "

Reviews

  • Pop said in 1979: In addition to the usual rude rock'n'rollers, the kissers are now also flirting with the disco train (unmistakably in the title “I Was Made for Lovin 'You”), whereby one even despises “standardized dance music” for successfully walking the tightrope “Must congratulate.
  • Popfoto said in 1979: You have obviously discovered the charm of beautiful melodies and catchy choruses and are now trying to refine your hard rock with them. A surprisingly good hit single even dropped out: "I Was Made for Lovin 'You."
  • Hammer said in 2003: The smash hit “I Was Made for Lovin 'You” became a disco hit and is still one of the classics in rock history.
  • taz.de said in 2008: This is not only the band's best-selling single, it is also one of the few really successful flirts between disco and rock.
  • Ostsee-Zeitung.de said in 2009: It was the time of “I Was Made For Lovin 'You” (1979) when Kiss was carried away by the disco sound and landed a world hit that could be danceable.
