Ignaz Schlifni

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ignaz Schlifni (born July 18, 1924 in Wolfsberg (Carinthia) ; † August 15, 2012 in Sankt Veit an der Glan ) was an Austrian herbalist, phytotherapist and non-fiction author .

Life

Ignaz Schlifni was born in modest circumstances in the Carinthian Lavant Valley . At the age of 13 Ignaz Schlifni developed meningoencephalitis (meningitis with suspected hydrocephalus ). Because of the pain this illness caused, he was also exempted from compulsory schooling . In the 1930s the company moved to Leoben ( Styria ), where the family lived on lease. Here the young Ignaz was to receive lessons on the zither . The teacher was well versed in herbal medicine and gave the family a medicine made from the Christmas rose (Helleborus niger). This should be the turning point in Schlifni's life, because the disease could be conquered in this way and the pain also came to an end. From this point on, medicinal plants played a major role in the life of the young adolescent and the seeds were laid for future work as a herb scholar.

Activity as a herbalist

A few years later he moved to his original home in the Lavant Valley, at which point Ignaz Schlifni was already a young man. Here he met his wife Erna after the Second World War , with whom he had two daughters (Nelly and Irmgard). He planted his first medicinal herb garden at his parents' farm , for which the people in the neighborhood felt grateful, because going to a doctor was often associated with costs. Ignaz Schlifni started early to help people and meet like-minded people. In order to earn a living, he worked as a laboratory assistant in a pharmacy in Klagenfurt , but after a while he was no longer able to carry out this activity because the approach in the pharmacy could not be reconciled with his personal convictions. This was followed by a job at Hubert Knaus in Sankt Veit an der Glan.

In December 1958, Ignaz Schlifni founded the “Association for the Research and Promotion of Biological Therapies and a Healthy Lifestyle” in Salzburg , which was renamed the “Association of Natural Life” (VNL) in 1960. In this regard, his colleague Annemarie Lorbeer from Klagenfurt should be mentioned at his side, in order to reach as many people in the country as possible, to network and to be able to help those seeking help. The headquarters of the VNL was at Ossiacher Strasse 10 , Sankt Veit. With diligence and will, the club was able to have almost 27,000 club members within 20 years by the end of the 1970s. The association subsequently split up, with the result that a new association was founded which, since May 22, 1982, has called itself “ Friends of the Natural Way of Life ” (FNL), later initially based in Wörgl . The FNL, headquartered in Hunnenbrunn , is Austria's largest and oldest herbal association today.

A central part of Ignaz Schlifni's work was also passing on knowledge of herbs. He achieved this, on the one hand, by setting up a good 60 medicinal and show gardens in Austria and Germany . For example, on September 6, 1992, he ceremoniously opened the “1. Vorarlberg Medicinal Plants Teaching and Show Garden ”in Lustenau . On the other hand, he initiated the plant training "Folk medicine herbal course according to Ignaz Schlifni" to become a certified herbal expert. Many companions from the first few hours still teach their knowledge today at the “FNL Herbal Academy according to Ignaz Schlifni”, founded in 2010 by federal chairwoman Sieglinde Salbrechter in honor of Ignaz Schlifni. Also in the Wimitzer mountains lies at 1180  m above sea level. A. an FNL herb garden that is known to many Carinthians. Among other things, he lectured as a medicinal plant expert at the Austrian Beekeeping Association as early as the 1970s .

Among his students was the journalist and author Siegrid Hirsch (* 1949). Among other things, the epithet "child maker" is the Ruprecht herb on its allegedly observed by Schlifni " conception promoting back" effect. Schlifni was a younger contemporary of the herbalist and author Maria Treben .

Schlifni spent the last two years of his life in the St. Veiten senior citizens' home "Haus Sonnenhang" and died at the age of 89 on August 15, the day of the herb consecration . He left behind three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

"Everything you need to live and stay healthy grows near you."
