Ignaz Vinzenz Anton Stanislaus von Mathy (also Matthy ; born April 5, 1765 in Trąbki Wielkie (Gut Kobierzyn); † May 20, 1832 in Pelplin ) was a German Roman Catholic bishop .

Life

Origin and education

Mathy came from the same name, Roman Catholic, Prussian noble family von Mathy. The family comes from Danzig and mainly produced civil servants, clergymen and diplomats. Mathy lost both parents at an early age. His guardians determined a career as a clergyman for him. From 1778 he attended the Academic Gymnasium in Braunsberg , which he graduated in 1783. The high school was designed, among other things, to train priests. There he received the minor orders .

Mathy was in the favor of the crown from an early age. On the recommendation of King Frederick the Great , he received a place at the Roman seminary Collegium Germanicum . It was therefore possible for him to study at the Pontifical Gregorian University. On November 1, 1787, the linguistically gifted student should give a sermon to Pope Pius VI. have noticed a year later he was with the dissertation De lege naturae to the doctor of theology and philosophy doctorate . He was ordained a priest on December 22, 1787 .

Canon and bishop

Mathy's return home first brought him to Berlin . There he was able to convince King Friedrich Wilhelm II, against the resistance of Bishop Ignatius Krasicki and his chapter, to accept him as a canon in the cathedral chapter of Warmia in 1789 . His installation took place on March 29, 1790. He accumulated several parishes , which he presided over, including in 1793 the cathedral parish of Frauenburg . In 1799 he was promoted to the position of provost of the cathedral by the king and introduced into office on January 21, 1800. After initial resistance, Mathy had gained not only the trust of the crown but also the trust of the cathedral monastery. After the death of Bishop Karl von Hohenzollern-Hechingen from Ermland , the cathedral chapter elected him on August 15, 1803 as vicar capitular and general administrator . In mid-1809 he resigned from all offices for health reasons, with the exception of the post of provost and a smaller parish. Once again he became active for the cathedral chapter in 1810/1811 in order to oppose its abolition in Berlin.

In 1811 he applied for a position as consistorial and school councilor in the Marienwerder government . His appointment by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. took place on June 9, 1811, where he was not deprived of the office of provost. In 1813/1814 he supported the wars of freedom , in 1821 he appeared with proposals for the reorganization of the eastern Prussian dioceses and thus got himself into the position of bishopric.

Mathy was the preferred candidate of the king on March 8, 1822 Bishop of Kulm selected, finally on June 6, 1824 in Frombork for consecrated bishop . He moved into his bishopric and in 1829 also moved the seminary to Pelplin. From King Friedrich Wilhelm III. he was initially appointed as Archbishop of Poznan , but his health problems increased again. He increasingly neglected the administration of his diocese. Mathy died in 1832 and was buried in Pelplin Cathedral.
