Ilgaz is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Çankırı . The place is about 40 kilometers north of the provincial capital Çankırı and is home to over half of the district's population (2018: 51.8%).

The district is in the north of the province. It borders in the south on the central district and the districts Korgun and Yapraklı and in the west on the district Kurşunlu . Cross-provincial borders exist with the districts of Araç , İhsangazi , Tosya and the central district ( Merkez ) of the Kastamonu province .

The city and the district crosses from west to east the European route 80 , which leads from Edirne via Istanbul to Erzurum and the Iranian border. It is crossed by the D-765 trunk road, which runs from Inebolu on the Black Sea via Kastamonu and Çankırı to Kırıkkale . The Devrez Çayı (also Koltuk Çayı ) flows through the district parallel to the E 80, which flows further east into the Kızılırmak . The Gök Çayı , the Bozan Çayı and the Bucuza Çayı (also Kayı Çayı or Çaykesen Deresi ) flow into it from the north . The rivers all come from the southern slope of the Ilgaz Dağları mountain range , which runs through the district in the north. The highest point is the Emirgazi Tepesi with 2404 meters, in the north of the district near the border with Kastamonu. Not far from there is the Kırkpınar Yaylası plateau with the Kırkpınar Gölü lake .

In addition to the district town, the district consists of 75 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 96 inhabitants. This is the highest number per district and at the same time the lowest village average with a province value of 195 inhabitants. Çörekçiler is the largest village with 294 inhabitants.
