Tagomago , Catalan Illa de Tagomago , Spanish Isla de Tagomago , is a Balearic island about 900 meters east of Ibiza . It is part of Santa Eulària des Riu . Its total area is about 400,000 square meters and its greatest dimension is 1525 meters. Tagomago is rocky and largely covered by scrub. The highest point is in the south of the island, 113 meters above sea level. The bay in the west serves as a natural harbor . There is a jetty there. Apart from this and a 20.4 meter high lighthouse built in 1913 at the south-east point 86.3 meters above sea level, the only development consists of a villa built in the 1980s in the interior of the island with its own desalination plant and power supply. Some rocks have ornate paintings from the time of the hippie movement. The Tagomago lighthouse is the reference point for shipping routes from Ibiza to Palma and Barcelona . The occurrence of blue lizards on the island is known.

The name Tagomago probably means 'rock of Mago', which in turn goes back to the Carthaginian general Mago , a brother of Hannibal . During the Moors , the island was called Taj Umayu .

It can be visited as part of an organized sightseeing tour from Cala Sant Vicent in Ibiza.

history

Tagomago is said to have been settled as early as the 8th century BC. In later times it served as a warehouse for pirates . At the end of the 19th century there was a small fishing village that was later abandoned. In the 1930s, Tagomago belonged to the Pujol family. During the Spanish Civil War , the Franco regime expropriated the family because the island was to be used for defense purposes. Tagomago was later sold to Prince Emich zu Leiningen from Amorbach , whose heirs separated from the island after many years of estate disputes.

It is now owned by the Hamburg real estate entrepreneur Matthias Kühn, who rents the villa on a weekly basis. The island became known in Germany through the wedding celebration of Sabine Christiansen with Norbert Medus.
