Initiativkreis Ruhr
The Initiativkreis Ruhr is an association in which 74 (as of December 2, 2016) business enterprises and institutions have come together. The association wants to promote economic development and structural change in the Ruhr area and supports projects in the fields of economy, education and culture.
The member companies come from sectors such as energy, services, trade, logistics and management consulting, including Siemens , E.ON , Borussia Dortmund and Deutsche Bahn . According to their own information, they generate a total turnover of 630 billion euros per year and employ around 2.25 million people. The Initiativkreis describes itself as one of the “strongest regional economic alliances in Germany”.

The association is based in Essen and was founded in 1989 by the first bishop of Essen, Franz Cardinal Hengsbach , the then spokesman for the board of Deutsche Bank Alfred Herrhausen , the trade unionist and politician Adolf Schmidt and the then VEBA board chairman Rudolf von Bennigsen-Foerder .

According to its own statement, the aim of the Initiativkreis Ruhr is " to advance the development of the Ruhr area and to strengthen its future and competitiveness ". Therefore, the association wants to promote projects in the areas of education, energy, business start-ups, logistics and culture.
Education area
TalentMetropolis Ruhr
The TalentMetropole Ruhr was started in 2013 and is an initiative in which the initiative group, according to its own statements, bundles the educational offers of business, universities and other educational institutions in the region. The aim of the initiative is to counter the impending shortage of skilled workers in the Ruhr area due to demographic change and to encourage young people - especially school leavers and students - to get to know and promote their personal inclinations, skills and interests. The most important event of the initiative is the Talent Days Ruhr .
Talent Days Ruhr
The TalentTage Ruhr is a ten-day training and youth development event . At several locations in the Ruhr area, school leavers can find out more about internships, job entry opportunities and different professions. During the event, the TalentMetropole Ruhr also awards the TalentAward Ruhr , with which the initiative recognizes people who "are particularly committed to promoting talent". The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros. The Talent Days Ruhr took place for the first time in 2014 and have taken place every year since then, most recently from September 21 to 30, 2016.
International School Ruhr
The International School Ruhr is a recognized, English-language supplementary school for the primary and secondary level with an attached kindergarten in Essen. According to their own statements, pupils can first take the “International General Certificate of Secondary Education” ( IGCSE ) exam, which is comparable to the German secondary school leaving certificate . Subsequently, the International Baccalaureate (IB diploma) can be taken at the school .
Energy area
InnovationCity Ruhr
With the InnovationCity Ruhr project , the Initiativkreis Ruhr wants to rebuild an industrial location or a city in the Ruhr area in an environmentally and climate-friendly manner while at the same time taking into account the characteristics of the industrial location. The city of Bottrop with its 70,000 inhabitants and more than 14,000 buildings serves as the "pilot area" . Specifically, CO 2 emissions in the city are to be halved and the quality of life is to be increased: For example, existing housing estates and commercial areas are to be converted into energy-saving quarters and communal facilities such as indoor swimming pools or kindergartens are to be heated in a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective manner. Since this year (2016), the InnovationCity Ruhr project has been expanded to include other municipalities in the Ruhr area: urban redevelopment measures based on the Bottrop model are to be initiated in a total of 20 selected quarters in the Ruhr area.
Business start-up area
According to its own statement, the Initiativkreis Ruhr wants to help company founders find their way into self-employment. With the Smart am Start project, for example, the founders of technology-oriented start-ups are supposed to get in touch with the bosses of already established and successful companies in order to present their business ideas and to exchange ideas. Since 2014, the Initiativkreis Ruhr has also been organizing the Founders Forum NRW , a kind of business conference with a discussion round, at which founders, young entrepreneurs, industrial representatives and potential donors come together and discuss possible new companies and business ideas.
Logistics area
Once a year, the Initiativkreis Ruhr, together with the chambers of industry and commerce in the Ruhr area and the economic development metropoleruhr GmbH, organizes the Ruhr mobility , a transport conference that is a "regional platform for decision-makers from politics, business, science and public administration" and itself as "the most important transport summit in the Ruhr Metropolis". The conference will discuss and discuss how the traffic infrastructure in the Ruhr area can be further developed and improved.
Culture area
Ruhr Piano Festival
The Ruhr Piano Festival has been its own foundation since 2011, but the Initiativkreis Ruhr is still the "general sponsor" of the event and describes it as its "leading cultural project". Every year from March to July the piano festival takes place in several places in the Ruhr area and is, according to the Initiativkreis Ruhr, the "world's most important pianist meeting", at which around 80 international musicians play concerts. The artistic director, ie the artistic director, is the cultural manager Franz Xaver Ohnesorg .
The Ruhr Piano Festival also includes a program to support young musicians, the so-called Education Program, which aims to encourage children and young people in kindergartens and schools to learn musical instruments. In October 2016, this educational program was awarded the ECHO Klassik music prize.
Current
European elections
For the 2019 European elections , Initiativkreis Ruhr GmbH started an action in which the citizens and, above all, the employees of the companies and institutions involved are called to participate in the European elections. Under the motto "#europasindwir", the Initiativkreis Ruhr GmbH not only calls for participation in the elections, but also targets nationalists and populists .
