Center Witten

The vehicle-Werke Lueg AG is one of the biggest sales - and service partner of Daimler AG in Germany and Switzerland .

From the car factory founded in Bochum in 1868, Fahrzeug-Werke Lueg AG has developed into a trading group - with 13 companies , 30 locations and over 1400 employees. With eight automobile brands, the group covers a broad spectrum: from Mercedes-Benz to Volvo to Ferrari, from the subcompact smart to trucks and buses. In addition to the classic car dealership business, the Lueg Group is developing new mobility concepts, particularly in the areas of fleet and claims management, parking space rental and e-mobility.

Company history

Established in 1868 as a wagon factory

In 1868 the Friedr. Lueg Wagenfabrik founded in Bochum. Initially, the company was in the carriage and wheelwright business. After the death of the founder Friedrich Lueg in 1890, the company was continued by the widow Helene Lueg until 1896 the son of the company founder, Friedrich Oscar Lueg, took over the management . Under his leadership, the former carriage factory has been increasingly concerned with automobiles since the beginning of the 20th century , initially both as a manufacturer of car bodies from its own workshop and as a dealer of automobiles of the brands Oldsmobile (1902), Adler (1908) and Saurer Vienna (1911).

1914-1945

In 1914 a contract was signed with Benz & Cie. , which was transferred to the merged company after the merger of Daimler and Benz and is the basis of the 100-year partnership with Daimler AG to this day. In the following years, Fahrzeug-Werke Lueg started selling other automobile brands: 1923 AGA , 1926 Wanderer , 1929 Dixi and 1930 BMW .

In 1924 and 1925, Lueg built Bochum's first high-rise, the 32-meter-high Friedrich-Lueg-Haus , which was the largest exhibition space in Germany when it opened in September 1925.

With the outbreak of the Second World War , the motor vehicle trade was drawn into the armament machinery of National Socialism . After the free trade in automobiles came to a standstill, the Lueg vehicle works with their workshops in Bochum , Essen , Langendreer , Recklinghausen and Velbert concentrated on their earlier role as a manufacturer of bodies and bodies. Business activities came to a complete standstill on November 4, 1944: the car factory in Bochum was completely destroyed in the course of the heavy air raid on the city of Bochum.

1945-1999

After the war, Fahrzeug-Werke Lueg resumed sales and service of automobiles in 1947. Under the leadership of Dr. Paul Mahnert, son-in-law of Friedrich Oscar Lueg, who died in 1947, renamed the former limited partnership to Fahrzeug-Werke Lueg GmbH and reactivated business relationships with BMW and Daimler-Benz AG. In 1958, the sales contract for Mercedes-Benz was renewed by elevating Fahrzeug-Werke Lueg GmbH to the status of a major representative of Daimler-Benz AG.

In the 1960s the company expanded again: In addition to the Essen and Bochum locations, other companies were set up in Gladbeck , Witten , Recklinghausen , Velbert , Castrop-Rauxel and Bottrop . In 1968 Germany's largest commercial vehicle repair workshop was opened in Wattenscheid .

In 1990 the company took over the former VEB -kraftverkehr in Zwickau, Saxony. On the day of the German-German monetary union , on July 1, 1990, Autohaus Lueg GmbH was founded, which today operates three Mercedes-Benz Centers in Zwickau, Hohenstein-Ernstthal on the Sachsenring and in Stollberg .

In 1991 new stores were opened in Bottrop and Marl .

Development since 2000

In 2000 the company changed its name to Fahrzeug-Werke Lueg AG . The company shares will continue to be held exclusively by the founder's families. In the following years, Lueg AG recorded strong growth: In 2001 a new car center was built in the western part of Essen and new centers opened in Recklinghausen and Witten. With the takeover of the sales rights for Mercedes-Benz in Mülheim an der Ruhr , Fahrzeug-Werke Lueg AG expanded its business area from 2003.

In the course of expansion , Lueg AG gradually expanded its range of brands , initially by taking on sales and service for the Daimler group brands smart (since 1999) and Chrysler and Jeep (2000–2010). Since 2003 the group has been selling the luxury brands Ferrari and Maserati through the subsidiary Lueg sportivo GmbH based in Meerbusch . In 2004, Lueg AG acquired the van Eupen Group in Essen with eight car dealerships in the Ruhr and Sauerland regions and expanded the range to include the Opel , Volvo and Saab brands . In 2009, Lueg took over the smart Center at the CentrO shopping center in Oberhausen .

In the same year (2009) the board of the Fahrzeug-Werke Lueg AG initiated a restructuring of the Mercedes-Benz Center in the Ruhr area with the participation of the works council and IG Metall . The Gladbeck location was given up in February 2009 and the jobs available there were cut. In order to avoid further redundancies for operational reasons , an early retirement program was set up for Fahrzeug-Werke Lueg AG, in the course of which the workforce was reduced. The Gelsenkirchen and Marl locations, initially threatened with closure, are to be retained. Between June 2010 and September 2011, the site at the Bochum headquarters was completely rebuilt. The reopening took place on October 9, 2011. In May 2019, the group announced that it would give up sales of the Opel brand due to changed framework conditions for dealer agreements and give up the van Eupen dealerships in Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr .

In 2019, the group took over six locations of Mercedes-Benz Automobil AG (MERBAG) in Central Switzerland. These include the three locations in Lucerne , the sales and service locations in Ennetbürgen and Sursee, and a body shop in Emmenbrücke . The sale comprised the business operations including all existing employment contracts for around 200 employees.

Brands

The Lueg Group offers authorized sales and service for six automobile brands.

In addition to the automobile brands Mercedes-Benz and smart from the manufacturer Daimler AG , these include the Italian luxury brands Ferrari and Maserati , which have been represented by the subsidiary Lueg sportivo GmbH since 2003 . The car maker Volvo has been kept since 2010 at two locations of the Volvo Centrum Rhein Ruhr GmbH.

In the field of commercial vehicles, Lueg provides authorized sales and service for the Daimler brands Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles and Mitsubishi Fuso . The Lueg Gewa GmbH specializes in vehicle bodies , repairs and painting.
