The International Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo ( French Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo ) is the most famous circus festival in the world and takes place annually in the Principality of Monaco . It was founded in 1974 by Prince Rainier III. founded by Monaco and is under the patronage of the Monegasque princely family. Since 2006, Princess Stéphanie has been president of the festival, which is known as the world championship of artistry .
Venue
The first festival was held in the tent of the French circus Bouglione , which stopped on the Esplanade de Fontvielle, a square in the Fontvieille district in the west of Monaco. In 1975 it was held in the tent of the Italian circus Circorama , and between 1976 and 1994 in the tent of the Italian circus Americano-Togni . Since 1995 the event has been taking place in the Chapiteau de Fontvieille, a stationary tent with an inner diameter of 49 meters and up to 3800 places.
history
Prince Rainier was very fond of the circus, and big cats were his specialty . With the festival he wanted to support the art of circus and offer the artists a platform for presentation to a large audience. He himself wrote the program and selected the participants for the first festival. Then as now, artists from circuses from all over the world are invited to Monaco. The International Circus Festival has developed over the years from a rather small event to become the most important circus event in the world; it is shown in over 50 countries. At the end of the festival, the “Golden” and “Silver” clowns were awarded, the “Oscars of Artistry”. The first Golden Clowns went to the French ringmaster Alfred Court for his life's work and the Spanish clown Charlie Rivel .
Initially the festival lasted only five days and always took place in December, later it was extended to seven days and since 2007 it has lasted ten days. There was no festival in 1987 because the 13th event moved the date to January / February of the following year. The festival was canceled twice, in 1982 because of the death of Grace Kelly and in 1991 because of the Second Gulf War . The 30th festival was held in 2006, at that time no clowns were awarded, only artists who had already won a gold, silver or bronze clown were invited. They all appeared in the six-hour closing gala, which was a tribute to Prince Rainier, who died in 2005. This brought together many of the best circus performers in the world in one show. Some of them appeared simultaneously, for example juggling jugglers Kris Kremo and Anthony Gatto next to and with each other.
New Generation Festival
In order to give young artists an opportunity to present themselves, the New Generation Festival was founded in 2012. It is the only youth festival that takes place in a real arena . Participants must be a maximum of twenty years old. The first festival took place on February 4th and 5th, 2012 - the date collided with that of the Budapest Circus Festival , which only takes place every two years. Princess Stéphanie is the president of the International Circus Festival (she took over after the death of her father in 2006) and the New Generation Festival. Her daughter Pauline Ducruet is the chairwoman of the jury of the youth festival.
Awards
The "golden" and "silver" clowns have been awarded since the festival was founded in 1974, and since 2002 there have also been "bronze" clowns. The winners will be determined by a specialist jury chaired by Princess Stéphanie. The prizes are based on sculptures by the sculptor Paule Malé . They are approximately 30 centimeters high with a five centimeter high base on which the name of the winner and the year of the win are written. The clowns of earlier years looked different from today's: They had short legs, wore a long coat and held their hands over their chests. Today's sculpture is a long-legged clown holding up a ball. In addition to the clowns, there have been a number of special prizes since 2008, which are awarded by various circuses or circus organizations. These include the prize for the festival's youngest artists and a special prize from the jury. There are now around 40 different prices.
The prizes of the New Generation Festival are called "Goldener", "Silberner" and "Bronzener Junior". In addition to these prizes, there are also several special prizes at the youth festival. One of the prizes includes an invitation to perform at the International Circus Festival.
