Irepress is an American metal and rock band from Sharon , Massachusetts that was formed in 1998.

history

The band was formed in 1998 and consisted of guitarists Jon DiNapoli and Bret Silverberg, drummer Sheel Davé, his brother Shan Davé on bass, keyboardist and singer Jarrett Ring and singer Shomik Bhattacharya. The band name is derived from the English word "irrepressible" (untamable, uncontrollable). Members developed this word in high school . When Ring left the band to go to college , the band continued with five, before Bhattacharya left the band, who lived in New York and could hardly participate in the band life. After that the band was only active to a limited extent and finally consisted of only four members. In 2003 the EP Trilogy was released , followed by the debut album Samus Octology in 2005 . The album was re-released two years later on Translation Loss Records . The album was Forbes Graham of Kayo Dot to hear as a guest musician. On the album, the group consisted of bassist Shan Davé, drummer Sheel Davé, and guitarists Bret Silverberg and Jonathan DiNapoli. In 2009 the second album Sol Eye Sea I followed on this label. On the phonogram Jarrett Ring had returned as a keyboardist. The band has so far performed with groups such as Isis , Wu-Tang Clan , Immortal Technique , Hatebreed , Kool Keith , Kayo Dot, Shadows Fall , Gym Class Heroes and God Is an Astronaut .

style

Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia described the band's music as post-rock, progressive hardcore and metal - gauze . The songs would contain rhythms borrowed from jazz . In addition, the music is purely instrumental and atmospherically complex and comparable to the music of Isis, Pelican and Mouth of the Architect . According to progarchives.com , the band plays instrumental progressive metal, which, however, mainly draws its influences from the post-rock area, so that the band can be compared to Pelican. In addition, the time signature of the songs brings back memories of math rock . The music is for fans of post-rock and innovative progressive metal. In her review of Sol Eye Sea I , Simone Bösch from Metal Hammer stated that you can hear influences from progressive rock, jazz, metalcore or rhythm and blues on the album . The songs are very complex, which makes them lacking in catchiness.

In an interview with Stefan Kayser from Powermetal.de , DiNapoli stated that the band wants to offer a musical “buffet of styles found by chance from all over the world”. Sol Eye Sea I consists of five pieces, which would be connected by small interludes. The album is full of disaster, rebirth and triumph. The album had riffs and individual parts and then "let the music flow". Kayser found the band's music to be a mixture of Frank Zappa , Dream Theater , Hawkwind , Ozric Tentacles and Man . Bret Silverberg stated in the same interview that the band is often compared to bands like Neurosis and Isis, which the group finds inaccurate. Silverberg agreed to a majority of the bands named by Kayser as a comparison. DiNapoli also named artists such as Pink Floyd , King Crimson , The Residents , the Mahavishnu Orchestra , alte Metallica , Meshuggah , Tool , Deftones , Sade Adu , Snoop Dogg , Dr. Dre , Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Michael Jackson as influences. In addition, the group is also influenced by smooth jazz and everyday noises. According to Silverberg, the music does not come from one member alone; rather, the band works together on the songs. According to Shan Davé in an interview with Nirav from obnoxiouslisteners.com , the influences range from Hum to Michael Jackson to Andrew Bird , Minus the Bear and !!! .
