Irina Alexandrovna Starych ( Russian Ирина Александровна Старых ; born August 26, 1987 in Kurgan as Irina Alexandrovna Maximowa ) is a Russian biathlete .
Irina Starych made her international debut at the Junior World Championships 2005 in Kontiolahti , where she was 17th in the individual, 12th in the sprint and 14th in the pursuit. With Svetlana Slepzowa and Anastassija Kuznetsova she won the bronze medal in the relay race. A year later she was very successful in Presque Isle . In the individual she was runner- up behind Veronika Vítková and in the sprint behind Olga Wiluchina , in the pursuit race she reached fifth place. Also in the relay race she won the silver medal on the side of Olga Wiluchina and Yevgenia Seledzowa . Nearest international championships were the Summer Biathlon World Championships 2007 of Otepaa where they at the Cross Country -race the junior women in sprint, mass start and in the mixed relay race Tatjana Belkina , Maxim Adijew and Rinat Gilasow won three gold. In Haute-Maurienne Starykh won a year later with the sprint, the pursuit and with Valentina Nasarowa , Dmitri Blinow and Viktor Wassiljew in the mixed relay race again three titles in the junior cross-country race. Before that she took part in the junior races of the European Championships in Nové Město na Moravě and won the bronze medal behind Elise Ringen and Iris Waldhuber and the relay title with Olga Wiluchina and Marija Panfilowa .
Starych made her debut in the women at the start of the 2009/10 season at Sprints in Idre , where she immediately won points as 13th and came eighth for the first time to a single-digit placement in the following race. After another sprint in Ridnaun in which she finished ninth, an international break from competition followed until she competed in IBU Cup races again in 2013 . In Martell , Starykh finished sixth in a sprint race, her best result in the series to date. The first championship for women was the 2013 European Championships . In the individual she reached 17th place, in the sprint she won the title and was seventh in the pursuit race. She finished fifth with the season. At the Holmenkollen in Oslo she made her first appearances in the World Cup a little later . She was 37th in the sprint and immediately won her first points as the second-best Russian runner. In the subsequent pursuit race, she improved to 21st place. In the first sprint of the 2013/14 season , she achieved a single-digit position for the first time as fifth in Östersund . At the next World Cup station in Hochfilzen , she achieved her first podium finish in the sprint with a third place.
Due to her achievements in the World Cup, among other things Starych reached another podium in the pursuit in Le Grand-Bornand , and a victory with the relay in Ruhpolding , she was appointed to the Russian squad for the Winter Olympics in her home country. A few days before the opening ceremony, however, it became known that she had tested positive for EPO in a doping sample . She then withdrew the Russian team for the Winter Games. It was blocked by the IBU until December 2016.
In January 2017 she returned to the national squad and the international stage at the direction of the Russian association leadership. In February she was able to start at the European Championships in Duszniki-Zdrój , Poland , and achieved outstanding success. She won the titles in the individual, the pursuit and with the Russian mixed relay, in the sprint race she took third place.
