The second sail training ship of the Polish Navy called Iskra (pol. Iskra = "spark") is a 1981 to 1982 built Barkentine (three master). It was named after the Polish training ship of the same name , which was used until 1977 .

The hallmark of the second Iskra is the rigging with three different types of sails: barquentines-typical square sails on the jib (front mast) and gaff sails on the main mast (middle mast), but Bermuda sails instead of another, type-specific, gaff sail on the mizzen mast (rear mast). The sequence represents stages in the history of the development of the sail .

Ship history

On November 11, 1981, the keel for the new Polish sailing training ship was laid at the Stocznia Gdanska ( Danzig shipyard ), which was to be renamed Iskra again . Similar ships are the Polish barquentine Pogoria (1980), which was designed by the Polish ship designer Zygmunt Choreń , who was also responsible for the Dar Młodzieży (1982), the Royal Clipper (2000) and the conversion of the Alexander von Humboldt into a sailing ship draws, as well as the Bulgarian barquentine Kaliakra (1984) and the Polish three- master Oceania (1985) with a special rig like a sails. The ships share, among other things, the modern flat tail . On March 6, 1982, the new Iskra was launched and began service as a sailing training ship on August 11 of that year.

The Iskra has from 1987 to 2007 regularly in the tall ships regatta the Tall Ships 'Races (until 2003: Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Races) participated; Exceptions were made in 1992 (Grand Regatta - Columbus '92) and 2005. In 1989, Iskra won the Cutty Sark Trophy for its contribution to international understanding and friendship. In 1990 the ship was awarded the " In the Service of Peace Medal " by the Secretary General of the United Nations .

From April 18, 1995 to February 10, 1996, Iskra made a round-the-world tour of the west via Tenerife , Rio de Janeiro , Cape Town , Jakarta , Sydney , past Cape Horn (November 27, 1995) to Ushuaia , Buenos Aires , Recife and Portsmouth -East direction.
