Israel (name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Israel is a Christian and Jewish surname and male given name .

Origin and meaning

The name is first documented on the Merenptah stele as a national name and reflects the Canaanite form of the name at that time:

Jisra'el , Hebrew ישראל , is the biblical name of the ancestor Jacob (Jaakov) after the fight on the east bank of the river Jabbok . Then the name goes to the descendants of his twelve sons, founders of the twelve tribes of Israel ( people of Israel ). It can be translated as “God fights (for us)” or “God may fight (for us)” and “God rules” or “God may rule”.

In his third letter, Anthony the Great translated the name Israel as “understanding that sees God”.

During the time of National Socialism , the law on the change of family names and first names of January 5, 1938 forced Jewish men to also use the first name Israel and use it everywhere (women the name Sara ), unless they were one in the guidelines of the Reich Minister of the Inside had given names listed on the keeping of given names.
