Ivan Blakeley Kaye (born July 1, 1961 in Northampton , Northamptonshire) is a British television, film and theater actor and producer .

Life

Ivan Kaye's passion for the arts of entertainment began in his early childhood when he reenacted television commercials at the age of two and later put on shows with friends. After a key experience at the age of eight, he joined a youth theater group at the age of eleven, which he took over organization a few years later.

Because his parents were social workers and often moved, Ivan Kaye attended thirteen different secondary schools and experienced bullying among students. He was beaten many times and his nose was broken. While he was studying at the insistence of his parents, he played in as many student plays as possible and began his professional acting career immediately afterwards with an early stage appearance in London's West End (see theater roles below).

As a result, Ivan Kaye had already had a successful theater career by the time he switched to television in his thirties. He had chosen to move away from the theater and turn to television in order to be able to spend time with them during his children's childhood and adolescence, as evening theater performances would have meant he would not have been home when they were out of school and University came.

career

His stage debut was Ivan Kaye at the age of nineteen in 1980 at the London theater Sadler's Wells in the role as Willie Wonka in a stage version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ( Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ). This was followed by other theater roles in the 1980s and 1990s, including at the Royal National Theater and the Piccadilly Theater ( The Rocky Horror Show ).

From 1990 he began his television career with guest roles in each of the British crime series The Paradise Club and The Bill , which was followed in 1992 by the title role in the 6-part detective series Sam Saturday . Since then he has taken on over forty other roles in television series and films, and since 2004 ( Layer Cake , Control - You shouldn't kill ) in movies .

In Germany, Ivan Kaye is best known as Duke of Milan Ludovico Sforza from the television series Die Borgias (2011–2013) and as King Aelle of Northumbria from the Irish- Canadian series Vikings (2013–2017) on the Canadian television station History Channel . From March to May 2017, he was seen on ZDFneo in the role of pub owner Mick Sturrock in the crime series The Coroner on the British TV channel BBC One . In recent films, which are also available in German, he has played the roles of the legendary Viking leader Ivar in Hammer of the Gods (2013) and Joshua Collins, father of the main character Barnabas Collins ( Johnny Depp ), in Dark Shadows ( 2012) played.

In addition to his rogue roles as the cold-blooded "drug lord" Polo Yakur (an "outstanding achievement") in Assassination Games (2011) and unscrupulous Duke Ludovico Sforza, his role as King Aelle - in Vikings, the Anglo-Saxon mortal enemy and executioner of the legendary series hero Ragnar Lodbrok ( Travis Fimmel ) - Ivan Kaye's profile has been clearly shaped in recent times. In his Twitter account he describes himself as "Villain for Hire" (in German: "to book as a villain"). His appearances in the second part of the fourth season of the series Vikings met with increased interest , in which his character King Aelle became important in the scenes of Ragnar's death and his own execution by a " blood eagle ". In an interview in September 2017, Ivan Kaye himself vigorously contradicted the opinion of this antagonist as a "villain", which was also controversial among the public .

From earlier years Ivan Kaye has worked mainly in Great Britain as Dr. Leroy in the soap opera EastEnders (a British counterpart of Lindenstrasse ) known, which he played in a total of 27 episodes from 2003 to 2004, as well as for the comedic role of the stupid Bryan in the television series The Green Green Grass (2005-2009). German viewers are more familiar with his early roles as Reuben Starkadder in the television film Cold Comfort Farm (1995) or as Adonija in the German-Italian-French coproduction The Bible - Salomon .

In addition to television and cinema roles, he has also appeared in three short films and taken on speaking roles in several computer games such as Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior (2003) and Star Wars: The Old Republic . From October 2017 to January 2018 he returned to the theater stage in the role of Tom Kettle in the London play The Ferryman .

In April / May 2018, Ivan Kaye will be back on TV in the UK as Pesca in the five-part miniseries The Woman in White , a new BBC adaptation of Wilkie Collins ' Victorian thriller The Woman in White . A pre- release review of the UK movie For Love or Money: An Unromantic Comedy (a relationship comedy released March 15, 2019) highlighted his outstanding acting as the father of the main female character.

Ivan Kaye's most important new projects include the pilot film for Amazon Studios adaptation of Stephen King's book series The Dark Tower , starting with the main character's youth based on Book 4 Glass and Navot Papushado's new action thriller Gunpowder Milkshake , which was filmed in Berlin from June to August 2019.

Together with Douglas McFerran , Ivan Kaye is the founder of the production company Comedy Ink Productions and has realized several episodes as one of the main actors and in some cases also as a producer.

Person and social commitment

Ivan Kaye can be reached directly via social networks , in particular the Twitter account and the Facebook fan page, and interacts with his followers. In addition to his native English , he also has French and Spanish skills. As his first name suggests, he has Russian roots. He has two grown daughters and lives in London ( England ).

Ivan Kaye is committed to environmental and animal welfare through his support for the Hounslow Urban Farm and the regular sharing of tweets and Facebook posts from The Mayhew animal shelter in London . He is also a supporter of the Justice for Andrew Jones campaign , which aims to bring the murderers of a youth to justice who was beaten to death in the street in Liverpool in 2003 .
