The JOWA AG , headquartered in Volketswil operates eleven regional bakeries, a durum wheat mill, a pasta factory, a location for gluten-free products and around 100 in-store bakeries in all regions of Switzerland . With more than 3000 different products and an annual production of over 166,000 tons and net sales of 787.3 million francs the JOWA one of the major food producers in Switzerland. In terms of turnover and the number of employees, JOWA is the largest company in the so-called Migros industry.

history

In 1928, in view of the delivery boycotts by branded goods manufacturers, Migros began producing its own food. For this purpose, it acquired the alcohol-free wines AG in Meilen and converted it in 1929 to Produktion AG Meilen (PAG). Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler was looking for a way to also produce chocolate . At the end of 1930, the textile industrialist Heinrich Spoerry-Jaeggy offered him an empty factory building in Wald ZH . At the beginning of 1931 Duttweiler and Spoerry founded Jonatal AG , named after Jonatal in Zurich . In 1933 " GiFa AG " was founded in Basel . Until the end of the Second World War , the three companies formed the core of Migros' industrial production.

In 1941, Duttweiler split Migros into regional cooperatives, which were merged under the umbrella of the Federation of Migros Cooperatives (MGB). He began to overturn the branch ban, which had been in effect since 1933 , which specifically avoided cooperatives and consumer associations . In the same year he fell out with Spoerry, which is why he moved Jonatal AG in 1942 to Meilen under the umbrella of PAG, where the new Meilen chocolate factory began operations and began producing confectionery products and caramels . After the Second World War, Jonatal AG expanded as a large-scale industrial bakery and opened several regional bakeries that supplied the Migros cooperatives: bread, biscuits and patisserie were sold in St. Gallen from 1948 , in Basel from 1949 , in Zurich from 1950 and in Bern from 1952 manufactured. The bakery in the Albisrieden district of Zurich was also affiliated with the new central wafer factory. When the new administration building was completed in 1955, the head office was relocated there, while the production of chocolate, confectionery and sugar confectionery was transferred to Chocolat Frey in Buchs AG .

Associated with the relocation of the company was the renaming of the company to Jowa. This marked the start of the second wave of regional bakeries' expansion, beginning with the Saint-Blaise location in 1956, followed by bakeries in Winterthur (1958) and Geneva (1959). The bakery in Suhr was taken over in 1960 by Birrfeld AG for food production (today part of the Hiestand group as TK Center Birrfeld AG ). Also in 1960 the first replacement buildings went into operation, the Zollikofen bakery replaced the location in Bern, the Birsfelden bakery replaced the one in Basel. In 1963 and 1965, respectively, Jowa opened a new pasta factory and another chocolate factory in Buchs AG. The MGB took this as an opportunity to concentrate the production of all confectionery on Chocolat Frey on January 1, 1967 and to give up the Jowa chocolate brand.

In 1968 Jowa opened another regional bakery in Ecublens VD , and four years later in Sant'Antonio TI . In 1970 she transferred the wafer factory in Albisrieden to Produktion Meilen AG (today Midor ). In 1977, a new bakery was built in Volketswil to replace the bakeries in Zurich and Winterthur . This location has been the new headquarters of the stock corporation since its completion. In 1985 Jowa put a durum wheat mill into operation in Wildegg . In 2000, the company took over Walter Leuenberger AG in Huttwil and three years later began to work in the export business. In 2017 the extension in Gränichen was completed. The centerpiece is a modern bakery. A high-bay warehouse and a wood heating plant for sustainable energy complete the building. The costs amounted to around 60 million francs. With the new building, Jowa expanded its production capacity for bread, which is baked directly at the customer's premises in the branches. In the same year, Jowa acquired the majority in Bäckerei Hug AG.

Locations

Today the company owns eleven regional bakeries in Ecublens VD , Gossau SG , Sant'Antonio TI , Marin-Epagnier , Volketswil , Münchenstein , Carouge , Gränichen , Zollikofen , Martigny and Zurich as well as a pasta factory in Buchs AG , a durum wheat mill in Wildegg and around 100 in-house bakeries who bake bread on site in the Migros branch.

In 2006, JOWA turned to a new line of business and, since 2010, has been successfully serving customers from all sectors of gastronomy, wholesale, C-stores, retail and export with the newly organized FGE [Foodservice, Wholesale and Export] department. The FGE department employs around 40 specialists from the areas of sales, marketing and administration who concentrate exclusively on business outside the Migros channel.

Products

In addition to bread and baked goods, the company also offers pasta, ready-made doughs , pizzas (fresh and frozen), frozen goods , mustard and gluten-free products. Well-known JOWA products include braid, Pane Passione, Tyrolean cake, Black Forest cake , Basler Läckerli and ham croissants. The company is responsible for delivering to the Migros branches, but also supplies customers outside the Migros channel such as gastronomy, major customers in the food service, industry and retail sectors and is active in the export sector. The most important products in the food service, wholesale and export (FGE) sector are frozen baked goods and semi-finished products such as B. Doughs and biscuits.
