history

Jagdgeschwader 72

The order to set up another fighter squadron was given on April 1, 1959. The air base group was set up in Celle , the staff and the two flying squadrons in Oldenburg. All relocated to the rebuilt air base in Leck , where the Jagdgeschwader 72 (JG 72) was put into service in November 1959 under its first Commodore Erich Hohagen by the Air Force inspector Kammhuber . The squadron was equipped with the Saber Mk.6 . Its construction was essentially completed in 1961. On November 1, 1961, Friedrich Obleser became the second commodore. In June 1962 it was finally placed under the 2nd ATAF . In 1963 the association was awarded the coat of arms with the Viking ship's stem. A flight day in autumn 1964 ended the stationing in North Frisia .

Fiat G-91R-3

The JG 72 moved from October 1964 to the Oldenburg Air Base , where it was renamed Jagdbombergeschwader 43 (JaboG 43) and merged with the reconnaissance wing 54 , which had been in Oldenburg since 1963 and whose flying group was disbanded. It was part of the 4th Air Force Division . As the future focus of the contract was on combat against targets, the new association became a fighter-bomber squadron. Until 1966, the squadron flew the Saber Mk.6, which was originally designed as a fighter.

G.91 of the LeKG 43

With the introduction of the successor model Fiat G.91 from 1967 the JaboG 43 became the Leichte Kampfgeschwader 43 (LeKG 43). As part of the restructuring of the Air Force in 1969/70, the subordination to the command of the 3rd Air Force Division changed. On October 1, 1979, the squadron was renamed JaboG 43 again in the course of preparations for the conversion to the light fighter-bomber Alpha Jet . The first Alpha Jet was handed over to the squadron on October 23, 1980.

The JaboG 43 had the order to provide a squadron of fighter-bombers as part of the Allied Command Europe Mobile Force (AMF) of NATO . As a result of the Gulf War on January 6, 1991 as part of Operation Ace Guard to protect Turkey from attacks from Iraq, the association moved 212 soldiers and 18 fighter planes to the Turkish air base Erhac. Only training and patrol flights were carried out there; there was no involvement in combat operations. However, there was an incident involving an armed attack by criminals on a patrol that could be repelled. On February 28, 1991 the planes returned to Oldenburg.

On September 30, 1993, the association was decommissioned.

The history of the Oldenburg Air Base is documented on a voluntary basis by its own association.
