Life

Johann Jakob von Hauck was ordained priest on August 3, 1884 in Bamberg. From 1893 to 1898 he was a religion teacher at the old grammar school in Bamberg and from 1898 pastor of St. Elisabeth in Nuremberg. In 1912 he was appointed Archbishop of Bamberg by Pope Pius X. The episcopal ordination on June 18, 1912 was donated to him by Ferdinand von Schlör , Bishop of Würzburg . In 1920 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Würzburg; After the death of Ferdinand von Schlör in 1924, his resignation was accepted by Pope Pius XI. granted.

He reorganized the diocese boundaries to Eichstätt, increased the number of parishes from 199 to 239, those of the curatia from 42 to 45 and in 1936 arranged them in 23 newly arranged deaneries. In addition, he consecrated 75 places of worship. Numerous orders were active in the Archdiocese of Bamberg, including the Oblates in Kronach, the Jesuits in Nuremberg and the Salesians of Don Bosco in Bamberg. The new seminary at Bamberg's Heinrichsdamm was inaugurated in 1928. In a pastoral letter dated July 25, 1912, he advocated a new building for the Ottonianum in Bamberg.

During the Nazi era, he clearly condemned the “neo-pagan” worldview, but otherwise steered a cautious course of conflict avoidance.

He is the namesake of the Jacobus-von-Hauck-Stift in Nuremberg and the old people's home Jakobus von Hauck in Bamberg.
