Friedrichsruhe hunting lodge

The Friedrichsruhe hunting lodge was built from 1712 to 1717 in the Hohenlohe town of Friedrichsruhe, which today belongs to the municipality of Zweiflingen in the Hohenlohe district in the north of Baden-Württemberg . The hunting lodge has remained intact to this day and houses the Wald- & Schlosshotel Friedrichsruhe.

History of the hunting lodge

Friedrichsruhe, whose original name was Tiergarten, was founded in the early modern period. Count Kraft von Hohenlohe-Neuenstein had a fenced hunting enclosure with a hunting lodge or pleasure house built here in 1612. The facility was destroyed in the Thirty Years War . After that it was slowly rebuilt and used for the count's horse breeding. The palace was built in 1712 to replace the pleasure house, which was described as dilapidated in 1708.

Construction and use

In 1712 the construction of the hunting lodge began under Count Johann Friedrich II., Later Prince of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein. He had other buildings erected around the castle. These were arranged symmetrically to the castle, including a hunter's house and some other farm buildings, which are only partially preserved. The former Grüner Baum inn has been renovated and redesigned and now houses the hotel's Jägerstube restaurant .

The hunting lodge was completed in 1717 and served as a guest house for the princely family. The surrounding forests offered plenty of opportunities for hunting, horse riding and excursions into nature. From the former manor, which was closed to finance the construction of the castle, ten farms were created, the houses of which were assigned to the castle along the central axis. In 1764 the zoo was renamed Friedrichsruhe, at that time the settlement had 21 residential buildings and thirteen outbuildings.

In 1783, a pleasure garden was added to the complex around the hunting lodge. For this purpose, a piece of forest was cleared and laid out like a park. Around 1799, around 72 people lived in Friedrichsruhe. At that time, fruit growing was of great importance for the population's livelihood. Until 1812 Friedrichsruhe was an independent municipality of the Michelbach Patrimonial Office, afterwards Friedrichsruhe belongs to the municipality of Zweiflingen .

While the hunting lodge was used as a guest house, the Princes of Hohenlohe resided in the nearby Neuenstein Palace . The hunting lodge was later used as the residence of the princely family.

In 1848 the dynasty of Öhringen moved its residence to Slawentzitz in Silesia.

Friedrichsruhe in the Second World War

After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, the castle was sold to the German Labor Front and was to be converted into a rest home, but the Second World War thwarted this plan. During the war the building was used as a warehouse and arsenal and remained undamaged.

Since 1950

After almost 100 years, the princely family returned to Öhringen around 1950 and decided to use the castle and the surrounding farm buildings as a hotel. In 1953 a small castle hotel was built and an annex was added in 1963.

The gourmet restaurant has been awarded a Michelin star since 1974, and from 1979 to 1983 under Lothar Eiermann even with two stars.

In 2005 the Würth Group bought the area. Today the Wald- & Schlosshotel is a luxury hotel of the 5-star category with 66 rooms and suites. At the end of 2008, a spa that belongs to the castle hotel was opened in the immediate vicinity .
