It is located 6 km west of Dörzbach and 11 km east of Schöntal, strategically located near the old trade routes that led from Worms am Rhein to Mergentheim and from Wimpfen am Neckar to Rothenburg ob der Tauber . The Jagst forms the border between Baden and Württemberg here .

history

There was already a refuge castle in Krautheim in the early Middle Ages . During archaeological excavations, a section wall with a ditch was found in the eastern part of the city (today's Altkrautheim ). It was a wooden earth wall like the ones built by the Celts and Alemanni .

The history of today's castle goes back to the 12th century. At this time, the local nobility began to move their seats from the valleys to more strategically located mountains. It is assumed that the construction of the complex began around 1172 by a Godefridus, who is named as a cleric in Krautheim in a Würzburg document from that year. What is certain is that the keep is the oldest part of the castle. It was built from large blocks of tuff in the style of a Stauferburg . The access to this tower was at a height of 10.5 m above the ground. At first the tower probably had a retractable wooden staircase before it was connected to the palas by a bridge in a later construction period .

Towards the end of the 12th century the castle complex was expanded considerably. The three brothers Wolfrat, Crato (Kraft) and Konrad von Krautheim had a high-mantle wall , the hall and a ditch built in front of the wall on the mountain side. At that time there were two entrances to the castle. one was at the neck ditch. Here a drawbridge led into the interior of the facility. On the west side a steep mountain path led from the valley to the castle. The chapel was rebuilt around 1230. For this the entrance to the castle had to be relocated. The formerly small chapel was expanded to include the gate hall and the choir moved into the eastern hall. In the years from 1240 to 1242, the Staufer imperial regalia ( imperial crown , scepter and imperial sword ) were probably kept in Krautheim .

In the 14th century the castle and the city came into the possession of the Archbishopric of Mainz , where it remained until the secularization in 1802.

The castle achieved literary fame through Götz von Berlichingen . Here in 1516 he shouted his opinion to the Kurmainzer bailiff Max Stumpf, who was sitting in the castle, with the expletive expression He should stop me licking . The Götz memorial stone today commemorates this event at the original site. Goethe later included the quote in his famous play Götz von Berlichingen , in which, however, historical fidelity is by no means maintained. The plant was destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525. From 1612 it was enlarged like a castle by Archbishop Johann Schweikhard von Kronberg of Mainz .

In 1889, the current entrance to the castle was knocked through the shield wall during restoration work.

investment

The tallest structure in the castle and visible from afar is the 30 m high keep, which has a diameter of eight meters. The wooden bridge leading from the palace and a staircase in the tower can be used to reach the viewing platform, which offers a good view of the Jagst valley

In the premises of the castle there is a castle museum which shows various castle models with display boards in the hall.
