James Murray

James Murray (* around 1830 in Scotland , † 1881 in Sidney , Ohio ) was an American lawyer and politician of the Republican Party . He was Attorney General of Ohio from 1861 to 1862 .

Career

James Murray was born in Scotland during the reign of George IV . His family then emigrated to the United States in 1831 when he was about a year old. There she settled in Sidney (Ohio). He attended public schools. His youth were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the following years by the Mexican-American War . Murray studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1851. He then settled in Perrysburg ( Wood County ). In 1860 he was elected Attorney General of Ohio. Murray won the election over Tuscarawas County's Democrat David W. Stambaugh with 215,277 votes to 189,999. He held the post for a two-year term. During this time he continued to live in Wood County. He then moved to Sidney ( Shelby County ), where he died in 1881. The only other political office he held was Mayor of Perrysburg.
