- India and Pakistan : Both states agree a ceasefire to resolve the conflict over areas in Kashmir .
- Orissa : The princely state of Mayurbhanj (part of the Eastern States Union ) merges with the later Indian state of Orissa.
- Switzerland : Ernst Nobs becomes President of Switzerland on a rotating basis .
- Austria : receives from the UK in the occupied zone control of the border with Italy return

- Sirohi : one of the princely states of the Rajputs , joins the Indian Union .

- USA : US President Harry S. Truman , re-elected in 1948, is sworn in for his second term .

- Israel : elections to the first Knesset
- Moscow : Foundation of the Council for Mutual Economic Aid (Comecon) by initially six states.
- Hollywood : Emmy Awards are presented for the first time.

- Stuttgart , 28. – 30 .: Founding of the former public services, transport and traffic union ( ÖTV , successor is VerDi)
Monday January 31st
- China : People's Liberation Army troops occupy Beijing ; the city, previously called Beiping, is officially renamed Beijing.
