Jean-Paul André Denis Marcel James (born July 14, 1952 in Rennes , France ) is a French clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Bordeaux .

Life

Jean-Paul James was born to Denise (nee Lelièvre) and Marcel James. He has four sisters and one brother. He attended a high school for economics in Rennes, then he entered the École Nationale de la Statistique in Paris . He worked for almost six years in the regional directorate of INSEE in Rennes.

Jean-Paul James entered the Rennes seminary in September 1980 . In September 1984 he moved to the Pontifical French Seminary in Rome . On April 3, 1985 he was ordained a deacon by Coadjutor Archbishop Jacques Jullien for the Archdiocese of Rennes . On September 22, 1985, the Archbishop of Rennes, Cardinal Paul Gouyon, donated the sacrament of ordination to him . He lived in Rome until February 1989, where he was appointed chaplain at the French national church of San Luigi dei Francesi in October 1985 . He was also a student at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. There he graduated with a degree in canon law and theology with a focus on moral theology .

From September 1990 to 1999 he was responsible for vocational and youth pastoral care in the diocese of Beauvais . Since 1990 he has been the spiritual director of the "communauté de l'Olivier" in Bruz near Ille-et-Vilaine, a community of Jean Vanier's Ark . In September 1999 he was appointed Head of the Saint-Yves Seminary.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Beauvais on January 9, 2003 . The Archbishop of Rennes, François Saint-Macary , ordained him episcopal on April 6, 2003 in the Cathedral of Beauvais . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Montpellier , Guy Thomazeau , and the Archbishop of Reims , Thierry Jordan . On July 8th, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Bishop of Nantes .

Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Bordeaux on November 14, 2019 . The inauguration took place on January 26 of the following year.

Jean-Paul James is a member of the Education Commission of the French Bishops' Conference . He is also the responsible bishop for the Arche communities in France.
