Jeffrey Cobb (born July 11, 1982 in Honolulu , Hawaii , United States ) is an American wrestler , known by his ring name Jeff Cobb and formerly at Lucha Underground as the masked wrestler Matanza Cueto . He appears in the shows of Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling , among others . He was also a wrestler and competed for Guam in the 2004 Summer Olympics .

Life

Career as a wrestler

Jeffrey Cobb competed as a wrestler in freestyle wrestling and in Greco-Roman style. During his career he mostly competed in the middleweight division , but also in the light heavyweight division. His greatest achievements include first places at the Oceania Wrestling Championships in 2001 (freestyle, light heavyweight), 2004 (freestyle, middleweight), 2005 (Greco-Roman / freestyle, light heavyweight) and 2007 (Greco-Roman, light heavyweight) as well as second place 2004 (Greco-Roman, light heavyweight) and third places in 2001 (Greco-Roman, light heavyweight) and 2002 (freestyle, middleweight). In 2004 he represented Guam as one of four athletes at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . He was given the honor of leading the delegation as national flag bearer. However, he lost his two fights against David Bichinashvili and Yoel Romero Palacio significantly and took last place. He ended his wrestling career in 2007.

Career as a wrestler

He then switched to wrestling and was trained in the Action Zone Wrestling (AZW) School in Hawaii by Oliver John. There he stepped up as Jeff Cobb and took on his nickname "Mr. Athletic ”, which he already wore as a wrestler. He made his debut at the major Anniversary Annihilation event on June 29, 2009, where he defeated Jet Akuma . He wrestled for AZW for several years and was allowed to win the championship there twice.

In 2015 he was introduced as "Monster" Matanza Cueto on the first season of the wrestling show Lucha Underground on El Rey Network . At first he only had acting appearances. He appeared there as the masked brother of promoter Dario Cueto, a muscle that all other wrestlers were afraid of. He made his in-ring debut in the episode Aztec Warfare II on March 22, 2016. He appeared there as a surprise participant in the Battle Royale and eliminated all participants, including the then champion Fénix , the former champion Prince Puma and newcomer Rey Mysterio . This made him the fourth Lucha Underground Champion . He was allowed to keep the title until the episode Aztec Warfare III of the third season. The battle royale for the title was won by the female wrestler Sexy Star .

In 2016, Cobb also made his debut at Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG). There he won the PWG World Tag Team Championship of The Lucha Brothers ( Rey Fénix and Penta el 0M ) on October 20, 2017 together with Matthew Riddle in the tag team The Chosen Bros. On April 20, 2018, they lost the title to The Rascalz (Zachary Wentz and Dezmond Xavier). On October 19, 2018, Cobb received the PWG World Championship from WALTER . He held the title for 427 days before losing it to Bandido.

On November 18, 2017, Cobb made his debut for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW). There he won the NEVER Openweight Championship from Will Ospreay on April 6, 2019 . On May 3, 2019, he lost the title to Taichi.

In 2018 he competed for the Ring of Honor (ROH) for the first time . In his debut match on September 29, 2018, he won the ROH World Television Championship from Punishment Martinez. On May 9, 2019, he gave up the title in a Four Corner Survival match to Shane Taylor. Brody King and Hirooki Goto were also involved in the match.

In the AEW Dynamite -Issue from February 12, 2020 debuted at Cobb All Elite Wrestling (AEW) when he Jon Moxley together with Chris Jericho Stable The Inner Circle attack. He lost his first and so far only AEW match against Jon Moxley on February 19, 2020.
