Yekaterina Sementschuk ( Russian Екатерина Семенчук ; born on March 24, 1976 in Minsk , Soviet Union ) is a Russian opera singer with a mezzo-soprano voice . Internationally, her name is also given in the English transcription Ekaterina Semenchuk .

life and work

Semchuk studied singing at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg . Her repertoire includes the classic mezzo parts of Italian, French and Russian opera.

Since 2000 she has been a guest at the Salzburg Festival ; she made her debut at the age of 24. Together with the choir and orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater under the direction of Valery Gergiev , she could be heard in concert in three Russian operas: as Polina in Queen of Spades , as a boy in the legend of the invisible city of Kitesch and in 2004 as Sonja in Krieg und Frieden - an the site of Anna Netrebko . In 2013 she took over Princess Eboli in Don Carlo in the Großes Festspielhaus . It staged by Peter Stein , it conducted by Antonio Pappano . For 2015 she was - again together with Netrebko - engaged as Azucena in the Alvis-Hermanis production of Trovatore at the Great House in Salzburg.

The artist has also appeared in concert and scenic productions in Amsterdam, Bucharest, Moscow, Tel Aviv and Verbier, as well as at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and the Opéra Bastille in Paris. In between, Sementschuk regularly returns to her parent company, the Marinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, where she was successful in the Verdi roles Amneris, Azucena, Eboli and Preziosilla.

On April 10, 2015 Sementschuk made her debut at the Vienna State Opera as Giovanna Seymour in Donizetti's Anna Bolena . Her rival in the opera and the singer in the title role was again Anna Netrebko.

Sementchuk sings in the most important concert halls in the world, mostly with her piano partners Semjon Skigin and Helmut Deutsch : she gave a Shostakovich recital in the Vienna Konzerthaus and Tchaikovsky in London's Wigmore Hall . She toured through Europe and North America. Under Gustavo Dudamel she took over the mezzo part in the Verdi Requiem , under James Conlon she sang the Dvořák Requiem (with the Orchester de Paris ) and Das klagende Lied by Gustav Mahler (with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival ). At the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, conducted by Vasily Petrenko , she performed a vocal part in the cantata Alexander Newski by Sergei Prokofjew . At the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Konzerthaus in Vienna she took on the vocal solo in Berlioz ' La mort de Cléopâtre , conducted by Valery Gergiev . Further appearances have taken her to Carnegie Hall in New York and Suntory Hall in Tokyo.

Sementschuk took over the Amneris in Aida at the Salzburg Festival in 2017 under Riccardo Muti.
