Joachim Friedrich Wilhelm von Oppen (* 1747 in Berlin ; † October 19, 1815 ibid) was Prussian major general and commander of the mobile artillery in Berlin.

Life

Military career

Oppen, who, like his brother, was born out of wedlock, joined the field artillery corps of the Prussian Army on December 17, 1763 and was promoted to second lieutenant in mid-September 1772 . In 1778/79 he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession and rose to staff captain by the end of July 1793 . In 1794 he became a professor of mathematics at the Artillery School. On October 8, 1797 he was appointed captain and company commander , and since 1802 he was also a member of the military society . He was appointed major on August 7, 1802 and on May 7, 1805 as a staff officer in the mounted artillery in Königsberg . In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the defense of Danzig , for which he received the order Pour le Mérite on June 19, 1807 .

On June 22, 1808, Oppen was appointed instructor for artillery exercises and on August 1, 1808, he was appointed to the commission of inquiry into the events of the war . The king wrote in his statement that you are known to me as a scientifically trained officer and a righteous man . To this end, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on November 7, 1809, with a patent from November 14, 1808. On February 21, 1809 he became a brigadier of the Prussian Artillery Brigade and on May 5, 1809 he received the Order of St. Anne II. Class. In addition, on November 30, 1809, he became President of the Military Examination Commission in Königsberg . For this he was released from his position in the investigative commission on December 4, 1809. On February 4, 1811, he was promoted to colonel with a patent dated February 9, 1811.

During the Russian campaign , Oppen became an artillery officer at the Graudenz fortress on March 10, 1812 . In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , he was dismissed from active service on February 27, 1813 with the character of major general and a pension of 800 thalers grace salary . He then succeeded General von Pontanus as President of the Artillery Examination Commission and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III on December 14, 1813 to celebrate his 50th anniversary in service .
