Nani Roma , actually Joan Roma Cararach (born February 17, 1972 in Barcelona , Spain ) is a rally raid driver. Alongside Hubert Auriol and Stéphane Peterhansel , he is one of the drivers who were able to win the Dakar Rally on both a motorcycle and a car.

Career

Roma became European Enduro Champion in 1998 . In 2004 he won the Dakar Rally on a KTM . Then he switched from motorcycles to cars and first drove for Mitsubishi . He finished sixth at the 2005 Dakar Rally, and third a year later. In 2009 he was able to win a stage, but was only tenth in the overall standings due to massive technical problems with his new Mitsubishi Racing Lancer . He was the only one of four Mitsubishi drivers who started who could even reach the finish.

In 2006 Roma took part in the Race of Champions for Spain . On June 5, 2006, his co-driver Henri Magne had a fatal accident on the sixth and final stage of the Morocco Rally.

In June 2009 he took part in the Transibérico Rally in the X-Raid BMW X3 CC.

In 2011 Nani Roma started for the X-Raid-Team in the Rally Tunisia.

Results at the Dakar Rally

After Roma had been in the lead for some time, teammate Peterhansel was able to push him from the top position during the 12th stage. After an instruction from his team, Peterhansel finally let Roma regain the overall lead, so that fourth place in the 13th and last stage was enough for them to win overall. With his co-driver Michel Périn , he won the classification with a lead of 5:38 minutes over his team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel.
