Johann Brunner was born into a family of craftsmen and farmers in the community of Surberg near Traunstein . He attended the Chiemgau grammar school in Traunstein and the private grammar school Schloss Stein , and in 1979 he graduated from high school.

In 1980 he began an apprenticeship as a mosaicist at the Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt in Munich. He worked on commissioned work, including a calligraphic mosaic for a mosque in Riyadh . To learn the craft, he made copies of classic, figural mosaics from Ravenna , Rome and Pompeii . He made contemporary mosaic patterns for Ludwig Schaffrath and Brian Clarke, among others . In Hanover, together with Hubert Distler, he installed the glass window in the Gustav-Adolf-Kirche . For the design of the onyx windows for the apse of the Expressionist Church of St. Johann Baptist with the artist Reinhold Grübl , Brunner was commissioned with the implementation. He worked on the reconstruction and assembly of the windows of Berlin's Tempelhof Airport with city images. Among the artists for whom he has realized works are José Rincón Mora , Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen , Blasius Spreng , Johannes Schreiter and Josef Oberberger . In 1982 he completed his apprenticeship with distinction.

After his acquittal , he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Eduardo Paolozzi . From 1986 to 1989 he was Paolozzi's master class student. Recurring motifs by Brunner at this time are honeycombs, labyrinths and virtual settlements. Around 1986 Brunner undertook a study trip to Peru and Bolivia. In 1988 he devoted himself to stone carving during a study visit to Carrara . A year later he received his diploma and was awarded the debutant award.

In 1990, Johann Brunner received a grant from the Ministry of Science and Art and laid the foundation for independence as a freelance sculptor and painter as well as in the arts and crafts . In this area he dedicates himself to the design of liturgical facilities and equipment, such as altars, ambones or sediles, as well as the design of church windows and the reconstruction of wall paintings.

He was involved in the restoration of the Mannerist wall paintings from the 16th century in the Walburgis Chapel in Klosterseeon , which was carried out between 2002 and 2006.

The Romanesque church of St. Ulrich in the district of Ainau von Geisenfeld from around 1220/1230 was extensively restored as part of the structural protection of the building after serious damage. Johann Brunner designed the three colored windows of the apse and made the glass panes himself. For each of these windows he combined three glass panes, painted in the classic technique, one behind the other to create a composite. The altar for the pilgrimage church of the epileptics St. Valentin in Marzoll was created by Johann Brunner around 2010 from Untersberg marble .
