from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Heinrich Böttcher (born July 29, 1804 in Groß Lafferde ; † June 9, 1884 in Hanover ) was a German pastor , local researcher , author and editor who warned with numerous writings nationwide about the consequences of alcohol abuse and especially of brandy .

Life

Johann Heinrich Böttcher, like Ernst Christoph Böttcher , was born into the family of a postman during the so-called “ French era ”. He went to school in Wolfenbüttel and Braunschweig and then studied theology at the Georg-August University and the Martin Luther University in Göttingen and Halle .

In 1833, when the state constitution came into force in the Kingdom of Hanover , Böttcher took over his first parish in the small town of Imsen near Alfeld (Leine) . There he founded to raising the standard of general education a reading club and a school teacher - choral society , he wrote his 1839 first edition and in the Hahn'schen Hofbuchhandlung in the residence of Hannover published Handbook About the spirits -Genuß whose magnitude, causes, consequences and healing. A handbook for heads and friends of temperance societies in order to promote the emerging temperance movement , especially to prevent drunkenness . Only a few years later, in 1844, in his 39-page letter to Germany's doctors ... published in Posen , he informed the doctors about the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption (see literature)

At the time of the German Revolution , in 1849, Böttcher took over the pastoral office in Kirchrode (which was later incorporated and is now Hanoverian district) . Here he sifted through the church archives and took measures to promote the income from the lands of his parish. Also in 1849, the cooper began to publish the magazine Der Mässigkeitsbote für Stadt und Land , subtitled Centralblatt for the associations in the Kingdom of Hanover and the Duchy of Oldenburg . The temporary and North German Mässigkeitsbote said sheet was Böttcher than a quarter century to 1875 out.

The sociable homeland researcher wrote several books about the localities surrounding his parish (see literature), especially after the anniversary celebrations in Wülferode from 1858 on, for example, on topics related to the Kirchrode parish , the Jakobikirche in particular or the St. John's Chapel in Bemerode , as well a chronicle of others .

In addition to his numerous social writings on moderation, which he also saw as a patriotic task, Böttcher, who was also a member of the Historical Association for Lower Saxony and the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences, was also politically active: at the time of the Franco-Prussian War , he published one in 1870 A pamphlet entitled What do we ask of France? A war and peace pamphlet. Written when the Germans were before Paris for the third time .

After his death in 1884, Johann Heinrich Böttcher was buried in the Engesohde city cemetery , where his tomb can still be found today .
