Johann Philipp von Rohde

Johann Philipp Rohde , von Rohde since 1798 , (born January 31, 1759 in Berlin ; † September 5, 1834 ibid) was a Prussian major general , astronomer , writer and most recently director of the engineering school in Berlin .

His father was a reindeer in Berlin, his mother a née Salbach.

Career

Rohde studied in Göttingen . On June 19, 1779 he joined the engineering corps as a conductor . On June 1, 1780, he became an engineering teacher in the Cadet Corps and shortly thereafter promoted to lieutenant. On May 1, 1788, he was transferred to the Académie militaire as a teacher of engineering , and on February 21, 1790, he returned to the cadet corps as a teacher of mathematics. On December 31, 1796 he became a staff captain with a patent from January 1, 1797. On July 6, 1798 he was raised to the nobility.

On July 20, 1801 he was promoted to lieutenant prime and appointed engineer officer from the place in Breslau. In the Fourth Coalition War he took part in the Battle of Jena and fought in the battle near Boitzenburg. After the war, Rohde received three months' leave in Hungary on August 30, 1807 . On August 7, 1808, he received the full salary of an engineer captain again. On April 6, 1810, he became head of the pioneer company in Königsberg , and on May 2, 1810, he joined the military school in Königsberg as a major and director. He also became president of the Silesian Provincial Military Examinations Commission on December 31, 1810.

After the Wars of Liberation , he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 20, 1815 . On March 27, 1816 he was appointed a member of the Senior Military Examination Commission and the second director of the Artillery and Engineering School in Berlin. On April 20, 1816, he joined the 1st Engineer Brigade, but on December 31, 1817, he was transferred to the 3rd Engineer Brigade and was also a member of the examination board for engineering captains. On April 6, 1818 he was promoted to colonel and on January 3, 1821 he was transferred to the 4th Engineer Inspection and on October 29, 1821 appointed director of the Artillery and Engineering School. On March 30, 1823 he was retired as major general with a pension of 800 thalers. On April 21, 1827 he received a one-off 200 thalers and from January 1, 1828 a grant of 224 thalers. He died on September 5, 1834 in Berlin and was buried on September 8, 1834 in the Invalidenfriedhof .

In 1795 Rohde received a prize from the Berlin Academy of Sciences for his work on the throwing curve. He repeatedly dealt with the numerical determination of astronomical parameters. So he found a way to determine the planetary masses with the help of perturbation calculations. In 1809 he published seasons of a higher order , with which he prepared the work on the cold ages by James Croll , Joseph-Alphonse Adhémar and ultimately Milutin Milanković .

family

On October 17, 1804, in Breslau, he married Johanne Friederike Charlotte Wilhelmine von Humboldt, a daughter of the major engineer von Humboldt. On March 16, 1810, he adopted his nephew and captain of the artillery Johann Ludwig Diezielsky (1783–1864), who took the name Rode-Diezielsky.
