Life

Johann Vermehren was a son of Paul Ver Mehren (1600–1664), silk merchant in Lübeck, from his marriage to Elisabeth Susanna, née. from Münster. His older brother Paul Ver Mehren took over his father's silk business. Michael and Paul Vermehren were his sons. Since he was 10 years old, Johann attended the Ratzeburg Cathedral School . In May 1650 Johannes von Maehren enrolled at the University of Rostock ; he studied law here and at the universities of Gießen , Marburg and Helmstedt . In Gießen he responded to a disputation chaired by Jacob Le Bleu in 1655 . In 1660 he went on a grand tour that took him to Switzerland, England, France and Italy. On the return trip he visited Augsburg , Mainz and the Reichstag in Regensburg .

After his return to Lübeck, Duke Karl zu Mecklenburg (1626–1670) , the second eldest son of the ruling Duke Adolf Friedrich I , who was apanaged in Mirow , appointed him to his council. When Karl died in 1670, he was taken over by his brother Johann Georg (Mecklenburg) . The ruling Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin Christian Ludwig I wanted to take him into his service, but Vermehren initially refused. After Johann Georg's death in 1676, Vermehren was advised by his brother Friedrich zu Mecklenburg , Prince von Grabow . After he died in 1688, Vermehren accepted Christian Ludwig's call and moved to Schwerin . He stayed here even after Christian Ludwig's death and from 1692 also served his successor Friedrich Wilhelm I , from 1692 as a councilor and later as a privy councilor.

Johann Vermehren married Christina Wolters on July 9, 1680; Christina Wolters died shortly after the birth of her daughter Christina in 1681. Johann Vermehren then married Anna Elisabeth Wibbeking [Wiedeking] in 1684 and had four other children: Johann, Friedrich, Anna Elisabeth and Sarah Regina.
