Johannes Harneit (born March 16, 1963 in Hamburg ) is a German composer, conductor and pianist.

Life and activity

Johannes Harneit studied composition with Günther Friedrichs and György Ligeti and conducting with Klauspeter Seibel at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . During his studies, together with the Danish composer Matthias Ronnefeld, he designed series of programs on classical and modern music and directed numerous concerts at the Kampnagel venue in Hamburg. Harneit conducted world premieres at the Bavarian State Opera, at the Bremen Theater and at numerous music festivals and specialized in contemporary music and new music theater.

Harneit has been engaged as a conductor at national and international opera houses since the 1990s. From 1992 he was director of studies and conductor at the Oldenburg State Theater and from 1996 at the Wuppertal theaters and at the music theater in Gelsenkirchen . In the 2001/02 season he moved to the Hanover State Opera , where he worked as music director until 2006. Here, among others, Luigi Nono's opera Under the great sun laden with love (director: Peter Konwitschny ) conducted. Harneit has made guest appearances at the Theater Basel , at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice , at the German National Theater Weimar and at the Leipzig Opera House . As chief conductor at the National Theater Belgrade , he conducted all the great operas by Mozart , Verdi , Puccini and Richard Strauss .

For the fist at the Schauspielhaus Graz in a production by Peter Konwitschny contributed Harneit incidental music for. The premiere took place on December 15, 2012.

As a concert conductor, Harneit has worked with a number of renowned orchestras, such as the WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln , the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart , the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, the Staatskapelle Weimar and the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg . Abroad, Harneit made guest appearances in Copenhagen (Danish Radio Orchestra), Budapest (Radio Symphony Orchestra) and Cairo (Cairo Symphony Orchestra), as well as with the Hanover Ensemble at the Edinburgh Festival . Johannes Harneit has been chief conductor of the Sinfonietta Leipzig since autumn 2003. In 2011 and 2012 he took over the management of the State Youth Ensemble for New Music in Schleswig-Holstein, where he worked with talented young musicians.

Harneit has received composition commissions from the Hamburg State Opera , the Alte Oper Frankfurt , the Scharoun Ensemble and the Beethovenfest Bonn as well as from the Schauspielhaus Zurich and the State Opera Hanover . From the beginning of September 2008 to the end of December 2011 he composed two operas for the Leipzig Opera based on texts by the East German artist Gero Troike ("Evening on the River" and "Flood", commissioned by the Leipzig Opera). The opera for children and adults "Alice in Wonderland" followed in 2013-14, which was commissioned for the children's choir of the Theater & Philharmonie Thuringia and premiered in Gera in April 2015 . Since 2001 the Harneits works have been published by the Sikorski publishing group .

In the 2014/2015 season Harneit was “Composer for Heidelberg” at the Heidelberg Theater and Orchestra .
