Johannes Peterlik (born January 23, 1967 ) is an Austrian diplomat with the rank of ambassador. Since 2018 he has been Secretary General at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA, formerly Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs ). Prior to that, Peterlik was the Austrian ambassador to Vietnam (2004 to 2009) and Thailand (2009 to 2013).

Life

Johannes Peterlik attended the RIS Swiss Section - German Language School Bangkok from 1976 to 1978 and the International School Bangkok from 1978 to 1981 . He studied history and economics and has the title Dr. phil. and Mag. rer. soc. oec. and passed his Préalable exam (entrance examination to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) in 1994.

From 1995 to 2004 he was the press spokesman for Benita Ferrero-Waldner , first in her time as State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry in the Federal Government Vranitzky IV , in the Federal Government Vranitzky V and in the Federal Government Klima I , then in her time as Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Federal Government Bowl I and Federal Government Bowl II . From 2000 to 2004 he was additionally entrusted with the management of staff unit 1 (coordination of foreign policy information activities) in Vienna , which was set up in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2000 due to the EU-XIV sanctions against Austria . During this time he was responsible for the development, planning, coordination and handling of measures to promote the image of Austria abroad, media support for the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, coordination of the foreign policy media work of federal and regional offices as well as Austrian delegations on the occasion of their official trips abroad and coordination of measures that generally promote the image of Austria abroad.

His father, Karl Peterlik, was Austrian Consul General in Hong Kong from 1972 to 1976, Austrian Ambassador to Thailand from 1976 to 1981 , Head of the Press Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna from 1981 to 1986, Ambassador to Czechoslovakia from 1986 to 1992 and from 1992 to 1992 1997 Ambassador to India .

In the 2016 Austrian presidential election campaign, Peterlik sided with the candidate of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) Norbert Hofer , who, if he won the election, promised him to head the presidential office .

Johannes Peterlik is married and has two sons. He is a member of the Catholic student association KAV Bajuvaria Vienna in the Austrian Cartel Association (ÖCV) and a founding member of the Christian Democracy Initiative (ICD) within the ÖVP . He is a member of the board of the Austrian Society for Foreign Policy and the United Nations .

Diplomatic career

From 2004 to 2009 he was ambassador to Vietnam, from 2009 to 2013 he succeeded Arno Riedel as Austrian ambassador to Thailand, co-certified in Cambodia , Laos and Myanmar .

From December 2013 to August 2015 he was head of cabinet of Sophie Karmasin , the Federal Minister for Families and Youth in the Federal Government Faymann II . From 2016 to 2018 Johannes Peterlik was deputy head of the cultural policy section in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since June 1, 2018, he has been General Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
