Johannes Richter (born March 4, 1928 in Neuensalz ; † August 26, 2014 in Plauen ) was a German prehistorian and director of the Vogtland Museum in Plauen.

Life

Johannes Richter was born as the son of VOMAG worker Max Richter and machine embroiderer Gretchen Richter, b. Enders, born. From 1934 to 1942 he attended the two-stage village elementary school in his home town. This was followed by three-year commercial training in a Plauen dye works during the war years. During the Second World War, at the age of 16, he personally witnessed the first air raids on Plauen on September 12, 1944. He later processed these youthful war experiences together with two other authors in a book Plauen 1944/1945 - A city is destroyed.

After the end of the war, from May 1945 to January 1946, he and other workers had to clear the bomb debris in the area of ​​the upper station in Plauen.

The new era led to a professional reorientation. In 1946 he started at the University of Leipzig with a history and German studies . In the 5th semester he switched to the subject Prehistory and Protohistory . In the first half of 1952 he passed his state examination with Friedrich Behn , the topic of the thesis was the bell beaker culture . After five years of study, he left the University of Leipzig and went to Berlin as a prehistoric graduate . There he worked until 1954 as a research assistant in the area of ​​prehistory and early history at the Museum of German History . The former Plauen museum director of the Vogtland District Museum, Rudolf Donnerhack , brought the 26-year-old back to his home country as a research assistant. Here he was involved in several archaeological excavation and research projects in the Vogtland . One of his most important works since 1959 was the excavations in the village of Pöhl , which had to give way to the construction of the dam .

For family reasons, he returned to Berlin in 1966. Initially, he worked there for three years as a sector manager for ground monument preservation, monument preservation and numismatics at the German Cultural Association . In this activity he was also responsible for the central issues of cultural and historical tin figures . From 1969 to 1976 he then moved to the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Berlin. In 1976 his professional career took him back to Plauen, where he took over the position of director of the Vogtland District Museum (renamed Vogtland Museum in 1981). Until his early retirement in 1991 he worked as the director of this museum facility, after which he devoted himself a. a. Research on the genealogy of the bailiffs of Weida and Plauen , Heinrich IV. Von Plauen and the preservation of monuments. His successor as museum director in Plauen was Horst Fröhlich .

Because of his meritorious work, especially in his youth work in museums, he was honored with the honorary title of Museum Councilor in the 1980s .

In 1990 he was a co-founder of the Association for Vogtland History, Folklore and Regional Studies, in which he was second chairman for many years. One of his particular merits was the fact that, during the political upheaval in the GDR in 1989, he established first connections with associations in Upper Franconia and the Upper Palatinate and helped to accelerate cooperation with partner associations.

Richter was married and had one daughter.
