Johannes von Ballestrem (* 1990 in Bonn ) is a German jazz musician ( piano , composition , also guitar ).

Act

Ballestrem studied piano at the Berlin Jazz Institute with Tino Derado , Wolfgang Köhler , Kurt Rosenwinkel and Greg Cohen . He then completed his master's degree at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Theater in Leipzig with Michael Wollny .

Between 2011 and 2013 he was a member of the Federal Jazz Orchestra , with which he recorded the albums Afropa and 25 and played numerous concerts, for example in West Africa. Further concert tours took him all over Europe, where he played in clubs and at festivals such as the JazzFest Berlin or the Jazzfest Bonn . In March 2014 Ballestrem opened the German Culture Week in Cotonou , Benin with a solo concert . His quartet, which included Anna-Lena Schnabel , Paul Santner and Fabian Rösch , has existed since 2014 ; In 2014 the band was among the three finalists of the Young German Jazz Prize Osnabrück . He has also performed with Till Brönner , Greg Cohen, Kurt Elling , Sebastian Gille , Drew Gress , Eric Harland , Michael Schiefel , Wanja Slavin , Ben Street and Jiggs Whigham .

In 2014, he released the debut album Vegas, Baby! With the trio Massive Schiene , which includes Ballestrem guitarist Florian Fleischer and drummer Dominik Mahnig . on the Mons Records label . With the group Sun Dew around Héloïse Lefebvre and Paul Audoynaud, he released the album of the same name in 2017 and the EP This Secret Clay in 2018 . He also belonged to the groups of Fabiana Striffler , Defne Şahin, Mira Falk, Friede Merz , Mariana Zwarg, the Andreas Hofschneider Quartet, as well as Markus Ehrlich's flexible reaction force .

Ballestrem received a research grant from the Berlin Senate in 2016 and spent six weeks in New Orleans , where he studied traditional jazz and stride piano .
