Sir John Anthony Cheshire , KBE , CB , KStJ (born September 4, 1942 ) is a former British Air Chief Marshal of the Royal Air Force , who was among other things Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Forces of NATO in Northwest Europe from 1997 to 2000 Allied Forces North West Europe) and was Lieutenant Governor of Jersey between 2001 and 2006 .

Life

Training and employment as an RAF officer

Cheshire, whose father Walter Cheshire was also Air Chief Marshal, completed his education at the Ipswich School, founded in 1399, and Worksop College and began his officer training as a flight cadet at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell in 1961 . After graduation he was promoted to lieutenant (pilot officer) on December 17, 1963 . He then took over as pilot of Handley Page Hastings - transport aircraft when on the airbase stationed RAF Colerne No. 24 Squadron . On 17 December 1964 his promotion took place on Lieutenant (Fyling Officer) and the Captain (Flight Lieutenant) on 17 June 1966. Subsequently, he was a pilot of Lockheed C-130 -Transportflugzeugen when in Singapore stationed No. 48 Squadron . He then returned as an instructor to RAF College Cranwell and was promoted to Major (Squadron Leader) on July 1, 1971 .

In the following years, Cheshire was the headquarters of the No. 38 Group Staff Officer for Tactical Air Support of the United Kingdom Special Forces (UKSF) and 1974 graduate of the Canadian Forces Staff College . On his return he was a pilot of Lockheed C-130 transport aircraft at the RAF Lyneham air base and was then aviation commander for operations of No. 30 Squadron . On July 1, 1977 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel (Wing Commander) . As such, he was first commander of the Special Forces Flight , the flight unit of the UKSF, and then an officer in the Department of Air Force Planning in the Ministry of Defense , before he was the last commander of the Royal Brunei Malay Regiment between 1980 and 1982 . In this use he flew helicopters of the types Bell AH-1 , Sikorsky UH-60 , but also the Avro 748 - airliner of the Sultan of Brunei , Hassanal Bolkiah . On June 11, 1982 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services there .

After his return, Cheshire was after his promotion to Colonel (Group Captain) on July 1, 1982 site commander of the Air Force Base RAF Lyneham and then in 1985 for a short time Head of Division for contingent planning at the headquarters at RAF High Wycombe. Promotion to Air Chief Marshal and Lieutenant Governor of Jersey

After his promotion to Major General (Air Vice Marshal) on January 1, 1992, Cheshire became Assistant Chief of Staff for Policy and Requirement at the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Forces in Europe SHAPE ( Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe ) . As Air Vice Marshal, he became Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) on January 1, 1994 . On January 1, 1995, Cheshire was made Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, so that from then on he carried the suffix "Sir". He was then promoted to Lieutenant General ( Air Marshal ) on January 23, 1995 and served as the successor to Lieutenant General Charles Edward Webb Jones from 1995 until his replacement by Vice Admiral Paul Haddacks in 1997 as a military representative in the NATO Military Committee .

He was last March 11, 1997 succeeding Air Chief Marshal Richard Johns as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces of NATO in northwest Europe (Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces North West Europe) . As such, he was promoted to General ( Air Chief Marshal ) with effect from May 11, 1997 . He held the post of Supreme Commander until the dissolution and transfer of this command to Regional Command Allied Forces North Europe (AFNORTH) in 2000.

On January 24, 2001, Cheshire replaced General Michael Wilkes as Lieutenant Governor of Jersey . He held this post until April 17, 2006, whereupon Lieutenant General Andrew Ridgway took over on June 14, 2006. On February 7, 2002 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Saint John (OStJ). On November 27, 2002, he was also Knight of the Order of Saint John.

His marriage to Samantha Cheshire had a daughter and a son.
