John C. Whitehead

John Cunningham Whitehead (born April 2, 1922 in Evanston , Illinois - † February 7, 2015 in New York City , New York ) was an American entrepreneur and business manager who served in the government of US President Ronald Reagan between 1985 and 1989 was Deputy Secretary of State of the United States .

Life

After attending the High School of Montclair (New Jersey) studied Whitehead, located at the Boy Scouts of America was committed and honored in 1937 as Eagle Scout with the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, economics at Haverford College and graduated in 1943 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Economics). After completing his military service in the US Navy during World War II , he completed postgraduate studies in business administration at Harvard Business School , where he obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1947 .

After completing his studies, he began his professional career in the private sector in 1947 with the investment and securities trading company Goldman Sachs , where he first became a partner in 1956 and a senior partner in 1976. In addition, he was most recently co- chairman of the board of directors of Goldman Sachs with John L. Weinberg from 1976 to 1984. He was also temporarily a member of the board of directors of the New York Stock Exchange and chairman of this body at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 1995 until 1999.

In 1985 he became Deputy Secretary of State (US Deputy Secretary of State) and held this position until the end of Ronald Reagan's tenure in 1989. During this time he received the Freedom Award of the International Rescue Committee in 1987.

Most recently, he was chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation from 2001 to 2006.

Whitehead was also involved in numerous social, political, social and economic organizations and was a member of the advisory board of the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution and the George C. Marshall Foundation, trustee of the National Gallery of Art , chairman of the Andrew W. Mellon - Foundation , the Brookings Institution , the International Rescue Committee and The Nature Conservancy, and a member of the Board of Directors of Harvard University .

He was also active in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (election year 1988), the American Philosophical Society (election year 1997), the Bilderberg Conference and the Council for National Policy .

The John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University was named in his honor.

Whitehead died on February 7, 2015 at his New York home at the age of 92 of complications from cancer.
