John Pascal Brooks (also John P. Brooks , born September 24, 1861 in Kittery , York County , Maine , United States ; † June 16, 1957 in Potsdam , St. Lawrence County , New York , United States) was an American Civil engineer .

Life

Family and education

Born in the small town of Kittery in the US state of Maine, John Pascal Brooks, son of James William Brooks (1830-1908) and Anna Augusta Wilson Brooks (1826-1917), graduated in 1882 from the Phillips Academy in Exeter in the US state New Hampshire . Brooks turned to the following to the study of civil engineering at Dartmouth College in Hanover , 1885 he acquired the academic degree of a Bachelor of Science , 1893 a Master of Science . John Pascal Brooks received his Doctor of Science degree from Dartmouth College in 1915 and from Clarkson College of Technology in 1931.

On June 25, 1888, John Pascal Brooks was his first marriage to Maude P. Perkins from Red Bank in the US state of New Jersey . In his second marriage, he married on June 4, 1903 , Belle C. Pearson (1872–1963), who was born in Lexington , Kentucky , USA . He was the father of the daughter Elizabeth M. Brooks (1891-1965) from his first marriage. Brooks died in June 1957 at the age of 96. He found his final resting place in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in South Eliot in the US state of Maine.

Professional background

During his studies at Dartmouth College, John Pascal Brooks took over teaching activities at public schools , which he continued after graduating. In 1886 Brooks moved to Saint Paul , Minnesota , where he took a job in a technical drawing office for the Burlington Railroad Company . Brooks then worked on the construction of a railway line near Sioux City in the US state of Iowa and a short railway line near Streator in the US state of Illinois . Brooks then worked as a civil engineer for the J. Edwin Jones Firm in Boston .

In 1890 he moved to Lehigh University in Bethlehem in the US state of Pennsylvania as an instructor of civil engineering . In 1897 John Pascal Brooks followed a call as Professor of Civil Engineering at Kentucky State University in Frankfort . From 1906 he taught as Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . In 1911, Brooks was appointed President of the Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam, succeeding William Sleeper Aldrich, a position he held until his retirement in 1928.

The Republican supporter John Pascal Brooks, who was one of the most renowned civil engineers in the United States of his time, was elected a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education.
